For me to get my brakes and all exterior lights working took me about 4 days. Just to tow, a temporary light harness will work. That just leaves the brakes. Start by checking the tow vehicle with nothing plugged in except the tester. Then test the cord. I tested my trailer brakes with a jumper wire and a battery charger. My blog has a section on the lights and 7-way plug.
It's all pretty simple. Do the brakes work? If no, fix them. If yes, just find the correct wire and plug it in. It's actually that easy.
