10 or 12 Inch Brakes???

What size brakes are stock on a 1973 Argosy 26 foot??

I will be pulling off the wheels later this week. (the trailer is not handy right now).

Not to be wise, but they came with both. The only way to tell for sure is to pull a wheel, and measure. You may be able to tell by VIN, but they could have been changed.

All Argosy trailers back then had 10 inch brakes, except the 20 models which had 12 inch brakes. The 1974 parts book spells that out.

In 1977 both sizes were used.

You don't need to pull anything off.

The easiest way to tell is look at how many bolts hold the backing plates (brakes) on, from the backside of the wheel.

If the flange is square, it then has 4 bolts, which mean 10 inch brakes.

If the flange is round, it then has 5 bolts, which mean 12 inch brakes.

Yeah, me too.

On a second note, I looked up some old Argosy parts books.

I corrected the above post to be more specific.

Sorry if there was any confusion.

But still, the best way, is to check and see how many bolts hold the backing plates on.

That always works.

I have the 10" brakes............... cheaper to replace that's for sure. I know that the 12" would be better but......... $$$$

The brake assemblies I'm looking at are 10" X 2.25" Dexter parts numbers 23-26 and 23-27 Is that right?? Whats the 2.25" for???

10 inch brakes have shoes that are 10 inches in diameter and 2.25 inches wide.

12 inch brakes have shoes that are 12 inches in diameter and 2 inches wide.

In many areas, 10 inch shoes or backing plates cost more than 12 inch.

Why?? Because they sell more 12" than 10".

Thanks........ So the pad contact is close to being the same it seems. 12" probably suffer less fade I would imagine.
