When to start thinking about replacing tires?

We bought a used 2008 FC from an as dealer. with visual inspection the tires look fine. At what point should we get serious about replacing the tires if the trailer has had relatively light use?

anything that we should be looking for as indicators for replacement? Just want to be safe when towing.

-get a a tread depth gauge (about 3-5$)

-rotate tires every 5-10,000 miles (10k is ok)

-find the 'born on' date codes on the tires...

when tread depth is 4-5/32nd start shopping tires...

OR if tread wear is uneven with areas down to the 3/32 nds indicators.

5-6 years from 'born on date' is time to shop tires...

or sooner if signs of degradation are seen.

tires that have been patched/plugged should be watched,

and balancing may be needed BEFORE replacement time.

consider adding a tpms,

they are a reliable means for monitoring leaks or sudden pressure loss

If you use your unit weekly, then just replace when the tread is like stated above, at about three to five 32nds or thread left. 2/32nd is the end and you are on borrowed time at that point.

If you are an occasional user (like most of us) then it is a function of tire compound or rubber degrading. Mostly from UV so cover your tires always even though you live in CO. The summer sun will exact it's toll. After about 5 to 6 years keep close watch on side walls and between treads. You are looking for small cracks. When you see those, the tire is reaching the end of it's service life and replacement should occur soon so as to avoid sudden tire failure.
