Weird Marathon Picture - what happened?

A member of the New England Unit shared this picture on our Facebook and gave me permission to share it here in hopes maybe our tire engineer folks could chime in on this. What happened here?

Now, that's your *professional* opinion? 😜😂

Honestly - that is the strangest thing I've ever seen on a tire! How is that even possible?!?! 😳

Seriously it looks like air leaked between layers of the tire, as a guess a manufacturing defect or weird damage. Another reminder to use better tires😞😞

....or just a lack of iodized salt in its diet.

At least it is an obvious problem that would lead to not using that tire.

That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.

That's my tire, second one that failed this way with less than 5000 miles, LR D. Another one just shredded and destroyed the skin aft of the wheel.

I've seen a high pressure water hose do the same thing. Water just found a week spot in the fiberglass belts in the hose, didn't quite puncture the outer layer of rubber. A pinprick and it'll blow like crazy - stand back, wear eye protection!

Same location on the AS?

Besides bad tire I suggest checking alignment.... Toe and Camber, distance between axle spindles... Check spindle, bearings, rim/wheel for damage..

How slow do you tow?
Is AS running "level" ???
What are weights of AS when running?

What's the date code ?

How long have you had the tire ? Not miles, But time.

This is a separation at the tread edge that allowed air to bulge the sidewall between layers.

Usually the steel belt punctures the rubber and lets the air out.

Sidewall separation from running flat, low pressure or impact with a curb?

Could also be an implanted alien baby.

Tow a 31' and travel light, all tanks empty. Tire was about 6 years old, low mileage and never in the sun. On the way to campsite last weekend, all tires exhibited normal temps and pressures monitored by TPMS. Highway travel between 60-65 mph. Noticed bubble (much smaller) while emptying tanks before departure (lucky to change prior to being on the road). When we got home, went to check pressure of tire in back of truck and there you have it. The tires on my Excursion are 12 years old with 75K, sits outside in the summer, tire dealer says keep running then until visible sign of deterioration or below min tread. Bearings maintained. Can't say much about alignment, but tow absolutely level.

A 6 year old tire is at the end (or past depending on who you talk to) of it's useful life regardless of the mileage.

From everything I have heard 12 years is a geriatric tire. Tires deteriorate from the inside out. Personally I would run from this dealer.

I figured there might be consensus on age, but I'm having trouble digesting that. I can see a sun damaged tire with visible sidewall cracks and such, but a tread/sidewall bubble while still holding 65#, blame failure on age?

Looks like 6 to 10 years for tire useful age...

Just wondering, my 2003 Excursion, never had the spare ever removed from stowed location, should I replace that too?
