E Load would be a LT tire.

Lack of use is hard on tires

Not to dispute anyone but there were different recalls on the Michelin LTX M/S tires and several of the pictures in this thread are of that tire. Not to say there haven't been any issues with M/S2 tires, they do have a 2 on them and, to my knowledge no recalls. See pic, note the 2. Another difference is that there are LTX M/S2 passenger and metric rated tires. My truck tire, pic below, is a passenger tire unfortunately, when I replaced my other truck's tires I got E rated M/S2 metric tires and it rode considerably rougher- much more heavy duty.

Update.

Just got off phone with Alvin in 'Consumer Claims' at Michelin re. my three Michelin LTX M/S 'E' tire failures.
He stated Michelin would not provide any warranty or coverage based on the following:
1. Tires were out of warranty.
2. Tires were not OEM.

Good luck to those who "upgraded" to Michelin LTX!

Sorry to hear that. I knew they wouldn't warrant the Michelin P version (15") I put on my trailer because they're not intended for trailers. I did call AS, however, before installing them to ensure it wouldn't void the warranty on the AS and was assured they wouldn't.

I am thinking about the GYEs after this season. It will be 5 years on the Michelins and I'm thinking of going back to ST tires and the GYEs are made in the US. They look much better than the GYMs.

If you've had a lot of tire failures - could there be something else going on? Do you weigh it often? Everything aligned and balanced properly? Religious about inflation? Speed in check? Etc? I seem to recall seeing a lot of tire failures in your posts and while you may have gotten a dud every now and then - and just wondering how your whole system is working out.

Thanks for the update - I wish it were better news for you!

Thanks for weighing in Tireman.

I might have pushed this set a little too long?
This tire was on the recall list. IMHO it was up to the owner of the tire to get it replaced. I had 4 replaced when I found out that mine where on the recall list.
To find out if a tire is affected by the recall:

Determine if it matches the information below:

Tire Description DOT Sequence DOT Production Periods (Inclusive) Michelin LTX M/S LT 225/75R16 115/112R LRE B3JH AKEX 0210 – 2512

I was aware of that recall back in 06/14. None of these tires were affected.

If the picture you posted on this forum, is a picture of a tire you had a catastrophic failure with IT WAS ON THE RECALL LIST:
your tire:
LT225/75 R16 DOT B3JH AKEX 0412
Recalled tires:
LT 225/75R16 115/112R LRE B3JH AKEX 0210 – 2512

Do you have a link for this info?
This is the only recall I could find referencing the LTX M/S 225/75R16 http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/owners/...tsa_ids=13T012

Quote:
NHTSA Campaign ID Number : 13T012
Synopsis : Michelin North America, Inc., (Michelin) is recalling certain Michelin LTX M/S tires, size LT225/75R16 115/112R LRE, manufactured from January 10, 2010, through June 23, 2012, and supplied for use as original equipment on certain Ford vehicles, and as replacement equipment on various brand commercial light trucks, full-sized heavy duty vans, small RVs and some large pickup trucks. These tires could experience tread separation. Tread separation can lead to rapid air loss, which may result in a loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash. Michelin will notify owners and Michelin dealers will replace the tires free of charge. The recall is expected to begin on January 6, 2014. Owners may call Michelin Consumer Care Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. EST, or Saturday and Sunday from 8:30am to 4:30pm EST at the following numbers: USA: 1-800-231-5893 (language options: English and Spanish)

Looks like you're right.

It was recalled.

The NHTSA alert did not include this info from the Michelin website: https://www.michelinman.com/US/en/he...calls/ltx.html

I spoke with a reputable truck/trailer shop here in Detroit, and he told me the Dexter axles on my Airstream cannot be aligned. Replace and remount is the only option.

Airstream service is telling me they can bend them for $270.

I'm not getting the warm fuzzies with that idea.

Bending or adjusting is the only way to change alignment on a solid axle. For a skilled alignment person, this can be done with very good results. For the unskilled tech it can be a disaster.

There are other vehicles with a solid axle. Namely the hudureds of thousands of Ford trucks built with a twin I beam axle. The production run spanned at least 3 decades.

From what I understand Airstream has been doing this alignment work for years.

Check out this document. axle alignment.pdf

You may also want to consider getting the weight off the tires when the trailer will be in storage for the winter months. Part of my winterization is the use of jack stands and deflating the tires.

I will take my chances with Michelin tiresover the rest any day. In all the years I have been running them , including the 15" LTX P325 I never had one fail. I run a set on my 1998 Explorer for 15 years and a great many of those years it was sitting out in the Florida sun baking. One of them finally gave out two weeks ago and split open at the sidewall. That one had three flat fixes over the years . No tire is infallible but running Michelins the odds are in your favor.

Where did you buy the tires? Since you were not notified that the tires were recalled it appears the store did not register you as the owner as prescribed by law. I have written a few times on my RVTireBlog about the advisability of making sure ALL your tires are registered.
Hope you still have the 4 tires as Michelin would/should replace all. When you called Michelin didn't you provide the DOT serial?

a little late to the discussion but I am sorry to hear about the second (and third) round of failures.

no tire is "fail" proof but I am not as big of a Michelin fan as most on this board are these days. I have had my share of failed tires and prematurely worn out Michelins.

I'll save you from searching back thru this thread to find my story and just give you a quick overview of it again now.

I had BFG Rugged Terrain tires on my 2003 F350. the truck is not a daily driver but sees towing duty several times a year and weekend trips to the hardware store/baseball fields. The BFG tires are/were made by Michelin. went camping last year and slipped a belt on one of them, put the spare on and since no stores were available to replace at the time I decided to replace the tire when I got home. 100 miles later had another one fail. left rear had a catastrophic failure at 70 mph with my 34 in tow. got towed to a local tire shop and put on a pair of Cooper TA3's cause that's all they had in stock.

after coming home did some research and found the BFG's were recalled in all the 17' and 18" sizes for belt failures. they did not recall many of the 16" versions like mine. The tires were within the time and mileage warranty so I filed a damages claim with Michelin. (my truck was pretty beat up from the tire coming apart) long story short Michelin agreed to give me free tires if I dropped the claim. so I put 2 more cooper tires on the truck and took the free tires for the trailer. So I do have a new set of Michelin Defender LTX on my 34 now but if I had to pay for them I would have bought another brand.

Michelin didn't recall my BFG tires because they simply didn't sell that many of them and it was worth the gamble. IMO that's not a company I want to buy from again. they gambled my life on saving a few bucks with a tire they know was defective. Recalling them would be 100% replacement of all that are on the road. they opted to only have to replace the ones that failed. and since the 16" version were generally all on older trucks they weren't worth nearly as much as a new truck so damage claims would be minimal.

I'm still a fan of LT tires over ST tires any day of the week and twice on Sunday's... but there is no such thing as a fail proof tire. LT tires are simply put a stronger tire and built better. That's just my 2 cents from a non expert. If you add up the complaints of ST vs LT tire failures on any kind of trailer you will clearly see its a heavy winner on one side... ST tires fail by looking at them funny.

sorry to hear about your LT Michelin woes. don't give up keep calling and go back to the original selling dealer and call Michelin over and over till you get results. If those were on the recall list they should pay for new tires and damages. just my opinion.

I had a very similar situation with my FC20 -
LTX M/S2 Tire Size, LT225/75R16 DOT B3JH 009X 4813 and DOT B3JH 009X 2313. These didn't seem to be covered in the recall.

Most of the folks that provided feedback here have provided input on this other thread. Two sets of photos - I don't have the detached tread.

Most of this was my fault- Too old a tire, No TPMS, LT tires on a trailer.

Glad you seemed to recover well.
