! TIRED OF TIRE SEARCH- recalls/complaints
Really in a quandary here in Baltimore.
Has anyone found a suitable load carrying truck tire that has NOT been recalled or has complaints??
I need tires for my GMC Sierra 1500HD. Currently running 265 70/R17 113 load S rating.
I've reviewed the latest posts here on tire recommendations and spoke to 4 local tire dealers.
>Every tire brand and model (or related models) I checked that were mentioned on the posts here and the one's suggested to me on the phone by tire dealers that were suitable and available for my truck through Mr Tire, Walmart, or BJs have:
(1) either been formally recalled, or
(2) have complaints filed on the site re defects,
in the recent past, or actively in question.
I'm using the ODI/NHTSA site:
http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/owners/...ues?prodType=T
Am I asking too much to find a tire that is not now or has not in the recent past come under question?
Thanks!

A/C,
You're sweatin bullets for nothin'. Get the Michelin LTX MS/2 and put your troubles to bed.
70 thousand mile warranty, and they ride so smoothly. Get rid of those junk Goodyear's that GM put on there just to get the truck off the assembly line. Trust me, you'll never buy another tire.
Sea ya "smoothly" down the road,
Gavin

Thanks
Thanks for the suggestions. The Michelins do look like the best if not only non-recalled choice...expensive, but what is peace of mind worth!

My 2012 Dodge Ram 2500HD diesel came with Michelin LT265/70R17E tires, so that saved me from buying new tires immediately. All of our cars run on Michelins. Never had a blowout or tire failure with Michelin tires in 50 years of driving on them.
Our Airstreams were converted to Michelins at the first available opportunity after getting them home. For the newest unit, I will change to new SenDel wheels and 15" Michelins replacing the 14" wheels and GYM ST tires on the dealer lot before driving several thousand miles to get it home. The Dill TPMS system is/will be in use on the current Airstream units.
I also installed the Centramatic wheel balancers on all the Airstreams and the Ram 2500HD. I also use them on my Gold Wing motorcycles and never had to balance the motorcycle tires again.

LTX Also Recalled-
This is getting depressing. Yes, the Michelin LTX (certain ranges) also have been recalled. Maybe the 265 70 r17 are ok since they have not (yet?) been recalled.
For those of you who may have these other sizes:
Excerpt from NHTSA site----
Report Receipt Date: JUL 12, 2013
NHTSA Campaign Number: 13T006000
Component(s): TIRES
Manufacturer: Michelin North America, Inc.
SUMMARY:
Michelin Tire is recalling certain Latitude Tour P255/70 R18 (DOT TIN B9YU99CX and DOT date range 1313 through 2113) and P255/60 R19 108 S (DOT TIN B9R1W3WX and DOT date range 1913 through 2113), X Radial LT2 P265/65 R18 112 T (DOT TIN B9KA003X and DOT date range 0513 through 2113) and P275/55 R20 111 T (DOT TIN B99Y001X and DOT date range 0513 through 2113), LTX M/S2 RBL P275/55 R20 111 T (DOT TIN B99Y56EX and DOT date range 3812 through 2113), LTX M/S2 ORWL P265/60 R18 109 T (DOT TIN B95E788X and DOT date range 1513 through 2113), and LTX M/S2 tires P265/65 R18 112 T (DOT TIN B9XP001X and DOT date range 0513 through 2113). Due to a perforation in the sidewall, the tires may lose pressure while driving. CONSEQUENCE:
A loss of tire air pressure may lead to sudden tire failure, increasing the risk of a crash. REMEDY:
Michelin will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and replace any affected tires free of charge. The recall began on July 22, 2013. Owners may contact Michelin Consumer Care at 1-855-851-4951. NOTES:
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to Home | Safercar -- National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
END EXCERPT
GUESS I'M STILL LOOKING!

Upon careful inspection of the Michelin data presented above, the recalls are tied into 2013 when there was an issue, as I recall, with the plant in Canada. The recall did NOT impact the second generation Michelin LT225/75R16/E LTX M/S2 tires I installed on our Classic in January 2014.

There is no such thing as perfection. Go with the most reliable brand you can find and know that if there's a problem, they're going to let you know (and more than likely take care of it).

Agreed
That was 2013. The MS2's were the replacement. That recall notice means little to nada right now. He likes to wave at ya!

I replaced two LTX's with the Cooper Discoverer AT3 specifically because the AT3 is Load range XL with a 2833 lb load rating in the size I use: 275/55 R20. They are on the rear of my TV while some LTX's are still on the front. I did not find the AT3 on the recall list. You may want to take a look at them. I like them better than my Michelins because of the better load range plus a more aggressive tread design--ideal for my 4WD TV. When the older LTX's on the front wear down, I'll be going with the AT3's at all four positions.

I would be more comfortable with a new tire that has been recalled in the past, because they have found and corrected the problem. If a tire has not been recalled, it may be because not enough have exploded yet get attention.

We put Michelin LTX MS/2 tires on our Jeep Grand Cherokee shortly after the recall affecting some of them and we asked our tire company about the recall. Their reply was that Michelin had taken back all of the affected tires they had in stock. They also very carefully pointed out (using the Michelin's numbers on the sidewalls) that the tires we bought were not within the recall. I doubt very much that any of the recalled LTX MS/2 tires are still on the market. The flaw was a manufacturing (not a design) problem associated, as mentioned above, with a single factory.
Our LTX MS/2 tires have been great.

Unlike other companies, as soon as a problem was discovered, Michelin recalled the tires and had them replaced. They did not complain, delay, sue or otherwise pretend there was no problem. How many other companies would do that?
I have used Michelins for 50 years and they last longer, have better traction (even in snow when worn down), and ride smoother than any other tire we have been unfortunate to have installed when we bought a vehicle or when I bought some other brand a few times a generation ago.
I know you are asking about your truck, but when the Michelins we put on our trailer 5 years ago were starting to have cracks in the sidewalls—not uncommon with any trailer tire because of long periods of disuse—Michelin gave me $80 off each new tire. After dealing with US companies that stick it to you every way they can (how much do you like your cellphone company? cable company? for example), Michelin knows how to make customers happy.
I get about 60-70,000 miles on a truck or SUV from Michelins. They cost more, but you don't have to buy new ones so often and paying mounting and balancing again so they are cheaper in the long run.

I had all the buyer fears of tires over the years. until we blew 2 tires at once. ON THAT DAY WE BOUGHT 4 TIRES CHEAP CHEAP Correctly load rated tires (Probably From China) We are part timers only about a 180 days a year and mostly for work (LOTS of MILES) and we have successful not blown one since that day 3 sets later. (almost 200k miles) 6 years. So my thought now is buy what is available check tires regularly and often. DO NOT CURB THEM and KEEP PROPERLY INFLATED. Don't slow down and only Look back to when needed!

I have Cooper AT3 tires on my F250, and Michelins on the F350. I'm happy with both, but did put a piece of very sharp shale through the tread on the Coopers. The Michelins seem smoother and quieter on pavement, but the Coopers are better off pavement.

Yes.
A lot of this has to do with expectations. No matter how good the tire is, someone will find that it doesn't meet their expectations - ergo, a complaint.
So you have to sort through all the complaints to see which are truly problems, and which are just people complaining - keeping in mind that we are talking about MILLIONS of tires for each to draw complaints from.

In my case I kept the factory supplied Uniroyal Laredo's on my 3/4 ton GM van for 10 years, 36,000 miles. I pulled them finally based on age rather than any bad experience or signs of physical breakdown.
Since the van is garaged and is used for towing only related duties, I decided not to go with the Michelin tires and instead use a Cooper E rated LT tire. Cost was about 1/3 less than the Michelin and had good reviews from the general public. Based on its usage I expect decent performance over the coming years.
I think every tire maker has experienced tire recalls so I'd go with the best tire your pocketbook can support and also do the research from customer reviews. Other than my poor experience with ST tires, my experience with the tires on my vans has been really good. Quite honestly I've not had any particular brands that I would avoid. The only thing I will not consider is no name tires when I am shopping.

I have Cooper AT3's on our F250. They have been good tires and I would recommend them highly.

Tires
Only one tire brand goes on everything I own, Michelin Tires. If you are rolling on anything less than Michelin tires you are wasting your money. They are expensive, but one pays for gold.
