Question Tire pressure label conflict

My appologies if this has been addressed before, I did a search and found lots of threads on pressure, but none that seemd to address my question.

There is a label on the side of my 19 foot Bambi that says tires should be inflated to 75psi cold pressure. My tires are labeled to be inflated to 65psi cold. I have always split the difference and inflated to 70psi but I am wondering if that is really smart of me. I am thinking maybe I should go with the tire manufactures rating and go with 65? Opinions please.

Bambi75th,
I think it all comes down to how the trailer tows. Just as long as you are within the range marked on the tire and it tows good. I experimented with mine and found the trailer rode better when the pressure was a little more than half way between the pressure ranges marked on the tires. I found the same to be true for the TV tires. Also don't forget to torque those lug nuts before each trip.

Thanks

Thanks DEITZ645, I always torque lugs to 95 foot pounds before each trip. There is not a pressure range marked on my tires, they only say 65psi cold. Likewise the tag on the AS also does not have a range, it only says 75 psi. I remeber a post from Ansy at Inland that ASs like a soft ride, hence I am thinking about going with 65 psi and see how it tows.

The tires on the Bambi are to be inflated to a Maximum of 65 psi. Please call Airstream or your selling dealership for a new correct tire inflation sticker.

Correct sticker coming up

Thanks Patrick, I will get the correct sticker. We leave tomorrow for a three month trip to the east coast (from New Mexico) and we plan to stop in Jackson Center on the way. I'll try to get it corrected there.

Maine an points in between

DEITZ645 ... we are going up along Lake Eire and Ontario and across NY, Vermont and NH to Maine. Sailing out of Camden in mid August. Back into the White Mountains and then we will park the AS for about 10 days and fly home to check on things. We fly back to New Hampshire in Mid Sept., then going up in Northern NH and Vermont. We then go to the Fall Colors Rally near Clarion PA. After that probably back north for a few days, then over to Maryland to see our daugher who is in garduate schools at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore. Then we will head home, back in time to vote in Niovemeber election.

Bambi75th,
WOW, now that's some traveling. When you are at the Penn Wood Airstream Park for the Autumn Leaf Festival stop by site A46 and say hello to us. We keep our '86 Excella there and will be there for the rally too!

It may be that neither pressure is correct. The correct way to inflate any tire is to know the weight sitting on that tire and inflate it to the manufactures inflation chart. If you know the weight of your trailer call or look up on the web the manufactures inflation chart and set the tire pressure based on the chart.

My E rated tires on my trailer have a max. inflation of 80 lbs printed on the tire sidewall. The Airstream plate calls for 50 lbs. The manufactures chart, based on my weight, calls for 45 lbs. I use 45lbs. The original tires that the Airstream plate refered to are no longer available.

Again the tires on my truck have 80 lbs printed on the sidewall. The chart, again based on the weight, calls for 50 front, diesel, and 45 rear.

Many people are now using E rated 16 in.tires on the trailers since there are no longer quality 15 in. D rated tire available. All E rated tires have 80 lbs printed on the sidewall. But not all E rated tires are being used at their max. load and thus the reduced inflation pressure.

Just for the benefit of others that may run across this in the future, never inflate your tires to more than the maximum indicated on the side of the tire. If the spec on the trailer or tow vehicle indicates a higher pressure, you either have the wrong tires on the vehicle or the wrong tire placard.

If you follow the Seaway Trail across the top of New York, I highly recommend Kring Point State Park (Alexandria Bay) and Robert Moses State Park (Massena). Electric only but showers are provided and decently maintained. $19 a night.

Mike
(presently at Robert Moses SP)

Mike ... as we go across norhtern New York we plan to stay at Four Mile Creek State park near Niagra Falls and then Long Point State Park. I'll take a closer look at your recommendations, though.
