Tire ?

We got home from a trip to San Angelo yesterday, and after I backed in to my storage slot my wife let me know that we had had a blow out!! It was the middle, curb side, tire. We have no idea when it happened, the tri-axel set up really takes the load when one tire goes. Our best guess was that it was during the last 150 miles because that was the last time we stopped. I don't know what happened, the sidewall blew out like it should but I couldn't see a nail. All tires are just short of three years old.

I called a local tire dealer, and he said that they didn't have the Marathon load range D to replace the tire. They have a 10 ply tire the guy said will fit the trailer and will work alongside the 6 ply's that are on the other five wheels, or I could use it as a spare and he'd re-mount the tire that's the spare now. (The spare has a steel wheel instead of aluminum.)

The question is, should I go ahead and get the 10 ply or wait until they get the 6 ply load range d tires in.

The odd ball tire will likely have a different (larger) loaded diameter which means it will end up taking a greater percentage of the load. It shouldn't take him but a couple of days to get the right tire in. I'd probably have him mount the spare (assuming that's good) on the Aluminum wheel and then mount the new tire as a spare. That way you rotate the spare through.

I thought that it wouldn't integrate with the others, but I needed someone to confirm that. Thanks. A good point on getting the spare into the rotation as well. They are all 3 years old, so I need to work the spare in and get some use out of it.

Both 6 and 8 ply Marathon tires are available.

"NEVER" install a 10 ply tire on any travel trailer Airstream has built.

When you replace your tires, use 8 ply throughout for added safety.

However, you can drop the pressure to 50 to 55 psi, when you use the 8 ply's.

They were delivered to my door in two days. I had the mounted and balanced at the Wal-Mart supercenter where I picked up the trailer in Tennessee - I live in Florida - for about $11 per tire. Yes, that included removal and disposal, mounting, balancing and new valve stems.

Cost Tire $81 on the rim $11 - total $92/tire.

Speaking of Marathon tires there was a rumor that goodyear was discountinuing ST 225/15/75 LRC tire. FYI I E-mailed Goodyear and received a response that this tire was not to be d/c'd. Darrell

My Airstream blew a tire returning from Colorado two weeks ago. I carry a spare wheel with mounted tire and a ramp to use as a jack.
Discount Tire ordered a D rated Goodyear Marathon for me and installed it today. I offer the following tips for all Airstream owners.
1. Buy a replacement tire that matches the ones you have.
2. Check the date code on the replacement tire. Do not buy tires that have been sitting on a dealers shelf for several months or years.
3. The black marks left on the aluminum side of your trailer by the tire can be removed easily with full strength Pine-Sol. Rinse well after.

Thanks for the advice against the 10 ply. I'll check out tirerack.com it sounds like a good alternative if Discount Tire can't do it.
