spare tire question

I have to call road side assistance to change a flat on my Airstream.
Will the spare under my A frame be the same as my other four tires? (wheels and rims?)
I'm going to hitch the trailer to my truck and roll the good tire over some boards to raise the trailer so the tire can be changed. Anything else I have to do?
Thanks!

The spare is the same size and brand as the rest of your tires, although it is probably on a steel wheel instead of an aluminum wheel. Loosen the lug nuts slightly before rolling the trailer onto the boards, the auto club guy can unscrew them easier up in the air if the nuts have been loosened.

One other thing... Don't let the roadside assistance guy jack up your trailer by the axle!

Yes, that could ruin your weekend--and your axle.

Thanks guys for the fast response.
Have you ever heard of a faulty tire that leaks? or more likely that I ran over a nail or similar item. It is the rear tire.

Sorry...almost forgot
I'm using the "lego" clip together risers. They're about an inch high. How high do I have to raise the good tire in order to remove the flat tire?

Not real sure but I think my "drive on" jack is about 4 inches tall.

The lego things work great to raise the good wheel. It takes three to get the bad tire clear. I speak from extensive experience (3 flats on one trip). If you get the tire up without loosening the lug nuts, no problem. Just have your partner manually apply the trailer brakes. It is usually better not to let some moron from AAA change a tire on an Airstream. He will most likely end up punching a hole in the bottom of the trailer or bending the axle.

Thanks Moosetags
I've been debating on whether or not I should change the tire myself......never having changed a tire before is it better to have the paid moron do it or myself? Will I be able to get it tight enough? The last guy that changed my car tire stood and jumped on the lug wrench to tighten it. (yes AAA guy)
Say I do do it myself.....what are the correct steps to take?
I guess I should learn at some point!
Thanks

Why can't a trailer be jack up by the axle - you can't put a floor jack under one end near the frame to jack it up?

Jacking

The reason for not putting the jack on the axle is because you stand a very good chance of destroying the axle.
These torsion axles are a different lot.
It is far far safer (and easier) to loosen the lug nuts and pull the good wheel up on blocks thus lifting the flat tire wheel off the ground.
These airstreams have specific jacking points. If you use the blocks, you don't have to remember where the points are.

"break" loose all lug nuts on the flat wheel. drive onto your boards. set iTV in park & parking brake and chock other side wheels front and back. finish removing the lug nuts, leaving the top one for last. remove flat tire & wheel. Install new (hopefully inflated, you'd better check that before removing from the A-frame) install all lug nuts hand tight, then slightly tighten w/ lug wrench in a star pattern, then snug them up w/ wrench. remove wheel chocks, back off boards, put TV in park & parking brake on, tighten (torque) all lug nuts on changed tire in star pattern, then clockwise pattern. Check air PSI in all tires on AS, check tight lug nuts on all wheels of AS, put away flat tire and tools...get tire replaced ASAP. JMTCW

Could be a nail, bad valve stem (we got a whole case of 'em--talk about return visits), even a defective aluminum wheel, or cracked steel wheel.

Thanks Zamboni (related to the smooth ice family?)
Seems simple enought....I"ll give it a try tomorrow.
Would you "fix" the bad tire or simple replace? Will most good tire shops carry the tire size for my Airstream?
Thanks
Dennis

As long as the tire has not been "run flat" or run low on pressure (evidence is a groove worn on the outside of the sidewall, and runner shavings inside the tire), and the hole is not too large, it can be repaired. With a patch, not a plug, and with the tire guy rebalancing the tire, not marking the locations of the wheel weights with a crayon, and hammering them back on. the best I have seen is called a "patchplug", that fills the hole made by the nail, and covering the hole on the inside as well.

Get a Sears torque wrench and do it yourself. You'll know it's done right.

Using a Jack?

The owner's manual for my 22' AS says there is a jack plate welded underneath. Many on the forum have said to not use a jack. What about using this jack plate? Dare I try this?

Maunual Quote:

"To CHANGE A TIRE with a jack see the
label affixed to the underbelly to the rear of
the wheels. This label, says JACK with an
arrow and points to a plate riveted to the
mainframe rail where the jack head must be
placed. A flat tire may also be changed
without the aid of a jack. Drive the unit up
on a ramp 8” wide, 6” high, and about 3 feet
long at its base. Position the good tire on the
ramp. This will raise the flat tire clear of the
ground."
