Should I grump at tire guy?

Two years ago, my tire guy (been my tire guy for 20 years) cheerfully sold me four Carlisle ST's for my 31' Sovereign.

This November, on the last leg of 6 month trip, 1st tire failed catastrophically in Beaufort, SC with 18,560 miles on it (we keep a log...). Last week another tire failed the same way at 19, 300.

We have a Pressure Pro and the tires were inflated perfectly.

Should I grump at the tire guy, or is this reasonable mileage for an ST tire?

Maybe. Were they load range C or D tires, and how fast do you normally tow your trailer? Have they ever been rotated or cross-rotated? Have you clipped a curb, or plugged either of the failed tires? Are both axles loaded equally?

Hey if things have been good for 20 years why not talk about it? Can't hurt right? All he can say is no. I think personally grandma was right you "catch more flies with honey than vinegar" why not just be friendly but disappointed? Without blaming him, rather the tires...so it could be a win win, save face, save customer thing for him? Hope it works out for you. Just so you know, we had lots of problems with our Goodyears this past season and replaced all of em, ouch. So I feel the pain! Best wishes with your struggle...

Well,

Load range D. The tires/wheels were balanced and rotated on schedule. They look really good - plenty of tread left, no apparent defects on tread or sidewalls but in both cases they failed across the tread, blowing steel belts outward as if an explosive had gone off within the tire.

Never had a tire (much less two) blow out that way in some 37 years of driving.

Can say that the Pressure Pro works great -- went off about 2 seconds after we heard the tire let loose.

Will have a genteel, quiet discussion with the tire guy -- he's a hard working, honest guy (rare these days in Miami). I don't really want anything other than to get this squared away -- I still have two of them on the trailer.

I had a tire fail like that one time on my '75 Mercury Marquis. It was a 721 radial, I think Firestone made them. I remember the advertising about "...seven belts of steel wrapped around two wrapped around one..." or something like that.

Anyway, the tread separated longitudinally. I caught mine before it blew, but the tire was basically splitting down the middle. I was going down the highway and the car starts shaking violently left to right, like sway actually. I pulled into a gas station and couldn't figure out what was wrong. Later my cousin, a mechanic, came and looked at it and discovered what it was. Never seen one before or since do that.

I'd recommend you look at the Maxxis UE-168 if you want to keep the 15" diameter. Otherwise, I'd get 16" wheels and put BF Goodrich Commercial TA's on it.

Hi, n2916s. You should sue Goodyear, damn Marathons; Oh wait, you bought Carlisles. Two years and almost twenty thousand miles, you should sue Pressure Pro for not warning you before the tires blew. Now to reality, just go and buy two or a complete set of tires and move on; After all is it your tire guy's fault that the tires blew? I don't think so. Tires are what they call a "wear item" and are expendable. We would all like to expect six years and sixty thousand miles from our tires, and with proper maintainence, we would also all like to live to be one hundred years old. But that just isn't the way things work. I'm sorry you lost two tires, but happy you and your trailer are alright. [my opinion]

Carlisle is apparently having some problems. My friend (sob trailer) lost three of his last summer on the way out west.

He tends to drive 65mph minimum, tires were 3.5 years old, 1800 lbs on each LRD, not low pressure, summer time. Otherwise, no explanation, just failed.

I haven't ordered my pressure pro yet but, intend to in the next couple weeks.

I had a Goodyear fail on a TV and the tread tore up my fender well. I bought the TV used with this tire on it. I contacted Goodyear who told me to contact my dealer who then told me to contact Goodyear. Goodyear paid me $1500 for the tire and damage.

Grump at him for what? How is it his fault?

After being in the auto repair business for 20 years nothing surprises me. But if a customer came back complaining about a job I did TWO YEARS AGO as if it was my fault the tires failed, I would tell him to kiss my foot and I don't mean foot.

Now if a customer politely requested warranty assistance I would bend over backwards to be helpful. But I can tell you that you will not get much out of the tire manufacturer. At best, they will PRO RATE the tire's value and give you 10% off if you pay full list price for a new tire.
