Been to JC several times. Been to the JC booth at the International several time. At both places JC had 16" wheels with Michelin LT tires mounted for sale. And they put them on some new trailers for a while. Old news. 10 or so years ago when I saw the first. I do not know what they do now.

In 2015 we replaced our 15" wheels and tires with 16" Sendel T03 wheels and 16" Michelin LTX M/S tires. Since then we have been to Alaska in 2015 and to the Atlantic provinces of Canada in 2016. We now have about 24000 miles on the tires with little wear. The GYM tires would have been worn out and maybe blown out as one did for us in 2010.

Michelins from the 2017 Brochure

To answer the earlier question; This picture below isfrom the new AS brochure under Classic specs; note the Michelins as "standard equip" on this model. Some "other folks" have posted that some AS service centers are also displaying Michelins as an option now. Many of us have been using for years with no issues...that was the point. (sorry for the small print in this picture...you have to select it and enlarge to see the details; at least, I do!)

I know there are many opinions. I have a 2017 28' Serenity. I want upgrade to 16 inch rims and Michelin tires. I need advice on whether the 16 inch rims and tires will fit given clearances forward and aft and where to find the rims. Thanks.

I just installed them on my 2016 '28 Serenity without issue. LT225/75R16 Michelins on Sendel 16x6 T03 wheels, same as higher end Airstreams like the Eddie Bauer edition.

Verdict just in. A higher order has chosen Michelin over Goodyear. Case closed.

Interesting comparison off the rim with the dealer tires (which are a similar weight to the GYMs that come standard on the Airstream).

Why would you put a 4000 lb rated tire on an airstream? Especially some off brand. If you have a 16,000 lb trailer fine, they would shake the rivets loose on a light trailer...I wil keep my michelins, thank you.....

triple axle

six tires at load range D or 2500# each = 15,000# weight capacity. Trailer max is 8900# so no issue w/ the need for E tires.

Multi-axle tires almost never have issues with capacity. A single axle tire can be running a little thin.

Dennis,

I have a 2017 28' Serenity. I am going to replace my GYMs - because I don't want to deal with issues down the road. I have Michelin's on my TV and love the ride and performance. Most of the discussion on making this upgrade also talks about moving to 16 inch rims. What is the reason for this? Does Michelin not make a 15 inch LTX M/S tire? I suspect that is the case. Thanks,

Yes, Michelin does make a15" LTX, but not in an E rated tire. That's why most decided to move up from a 15 to a 16" rim, to take advantage of E rated tires from many brands including Michelins.

I have Michelin LTX/MS2/P235 R15/108T tires on our 2013 30' International.
It is a Light Truck Extra load tire. @ 50 PSI its load capacity is 2183 lbs.
They are available however most places don't stock them and have to order them in.
They are great tires been using them for three years now.
I couldn't justify spending the extra money for the 16" wheels and other bells and whistles.
I have had these tires on my trucks and never had one fail regardless how overloaded I ran them.

Lumatic, I had Discount tire install 4 15" new Goodyear Endurance on my 25 ft dual axle Flying Cloud today for $600 all in. I've been buying tires for 3 cars from them for 15 years and my trust level is high. They jacked them under the axles after taking the time to discuss my concerns. Their explanation was that the jack points are for changing a single tire. They are not intended to lift the whole trailer. The axles are for supporting the entire trailer. As long as you use 4 jacks at the same time on the axles, makes sense to me.

These are E rated tires 80psi. They recommended running at the 80 max as that's what they are designed for. Strongly discouraged me from buying anything but trailer tires. Since you should replace by age and not by miles I don't look at mileage warranty. I'll see if this produces a rough ride and if stuff gets tossed around inside. Will report back. I only buy Michelen for all my vehicles up until now so we'll see, but seem to be a much beefier tire than the GYM Marathon

It's fine to jack from the axle FLANGE, but not the axle tubes themselves.

In October of 2012, we migrated our 2013 25FB International Serenity from the stock

15" GYM ST225/75R15D tires rated 2,540 pounds @ 65 psi and 28.3" in diameter

to

15" Michelin LTX (P) 235/75R15 XL tires rated 2,183 pounds @ 50 psi derated to 1,985 pounds form trailer use and 28.9" in diameter. The trailer was elevated about 0.3". Tire pressure was 44 psi. Mounted on the original stock wheels.

Some folks also put that same tire on the 27/28 models as the GVW was only 300 pounds higher than 7,300 pound GVW of the 25FB. Also installed Centramatic wheel balancers.

We removed the stock 15" GYM ST225/75R15D tires from the 2014 Classic as soon as I got it to the storage unit. I installed 16" Michelin LT225/75R16/E LTX M/S2 tires rated 2,680 pounds @ 80 psi and 29.2" in diameter. These same tires are for sale at the entrance to the Airstream customer service center in Jackson Center, Ohio. They raised the trailer 0.45". They were mounted on the SenDel T03-66655T wheels used by the factory with the 16" Michelins that are compatible with all 25' and longer wide body twin axle Airstreams. Also installed Centramatic wheel balancers and a Dill 1506-453 TPMS system.

These 16" Michelin tires and 16" SenDel wheels were installed on the Edie Bauer models, the Pendleton and 2015 and later 31' Classics. They cheapened the significantly heavier empty weight 2017 two axle 33' Classic with the stock 15" GYM ST225/75R15D tires.

We migrated our 2015 23D International Serenity from the stock

14" GYM ST215/75R14C tires rated 1,870 pounds @ 50 psi and 26.7" in diameter

to

15" Michelin LTX (P) 235/75R15 XL tires rated 2,183 pounds @ 50 psi derated to 1,985 pounds for tailer use and 28.9" in diameter mounted on SenDel T03-56545T wheels that match the design of the ones on the Classic.

This tire is 1.1" larger in diameter than the stock tire and due to a manufacturing defect, we had to trim the front of the curb side wheel opening to match the street side and then they fit fine. We also installed Centramatic wheel balancers and a Dill 1506-453 TPMS system. This trailer has a road ready weight of 6,068 pounds which is 900 pounds lighter than the our 25FB and put the 23D at the same elevation as the 25FB. We saved the Hensley Arrow hitch when the 25FB was traded in on the Classic that got a ProPride hitch (second generation Jim Hensley design) and re-used that Hensley Arrow hitch on the 23D with the same tow vehicle (2007 Mercedes ML320 CDI) and the same hitch setup measurements.

Centramatic Part Numbers for Airstream use:

14" 5 bolt pattern #200-221 standard part

15" 6 bolt pattern #200-221 Special

16" 6 bolt pattern #300-356 all A plates

I inspected my Goodyear Marathons today. I bought the 2014 27 FB International new three years ago next month so the tires are three years old plus however long it was on the dealers lot so, maybe a few months more. I have put about 20,000 total miles on them. They look like brand new, no visible tread wear. After reading the horror stories about these GYM's, should I go ahead and change them out now, or give them another year? We are heading out next month on a 2200 mile trip...

My GYM's have been fine as well but I am planning to change them out for the new Goodyear ST tires when they age out this Fall (3 plus years).
Probably overkill but after a debacle with four Carlisles blowing out within about 6000 miles of each other, I am not keen at changing tires on the side of the road ever again...
