Nokian Rotiiva AT 235/75R15 116/113S
I saw this while surfing. Know nothing about the company, but a 15" LT tire with that load range sure got my attention. T428439 235/75R15LT 116/113S is the item, made by Nokian.
Anyone know anything about these tires??

Have had Nokians on my Touareg. Nokian is known for their snow tires but also makes these all season/all terrain tires as well. Good for light off road use but have a softer compound so they can wear faster on a heavy vehicle. Have no idea how they would hold up on a trailer, but may wear faster.

Hi Scott
I have not noticed this tire before, looks very interesting.
Reading their specs it looks like it is designed for summer highway use so I don't think temperature would be a problem. From what I understand they are a very good company.
The only gamble I think is how they will react to the turning forces on a tandem axle. Over the years we have seen a couple of tires that would loose their tread due to trailer use. I doubt that would be the case with the Nokian but you don't really know until you try them. I am sure they are not tested for that.

I've tried to get these tires from Discount Tire and they couldn't get them.
There is plenty of load capacity for heavier trailers and single axle trailers that carry a big load.

Thanks Andrew. I hate to be the beta tester but can they be worse than the GYMs I have now?

Hmm. I didn't actually try to order them but they do seem to be available via the web.

Hi Scott
I doubt they would ever be a problem, you could use the Michelin P235/75R x 15's on yours if you did want something with a track record. We have put a few thousand of these on many on 30's including classics which run them close to maximum load and never an issue.
If we have a 30 in stock that I can use this summer I may try a set of the Nokian's on it.

As much as I'd love to use the Michelins (I have them on my truck already), they are only rated at 2205 lbs. That's just cutting it, and doesn't account for the 10% derating that's required.
Then again, my trailer isn't near 8800 lbs but still...

Scott - have you thought about Goodyear Cargo tires? The G26 comes in a 15" and carries 2400# - no de-rating required. I ALMOST a went with these except they will definitely be about an inch or so lower than the Michelins meaning is have to adjust my hitch and the trailer would be closer to bottoming out. But you might want to have a look.

Four of those Pirelli will get you #9,430 of capacity. What are your axle weight ratings or weights when fully loaded for travel? The #8,800 is your trailer's GVWR. That includes tongue weight.

Since they are LT tires you need to derate them by 10%. So that's under my axle weight of 8800 lbs.

The Nokian tires support over 10,000 lbs even derated.

LT tires do not require derating. Only "P" passenger tires require derating.
Unless I'm mistaken and Airstream has their online info wrong, the 8,800 pounds you reference is the GVWR. The Gross Vehicle Weight Rating. Each axle has its own rating. They are listed as FAWR and RAWR, Front Axle Weight Rating and Rear Axle Weight Rating. It is listed on the Tire and Loading information sticker on the side of your trailer. I would guess that your trailer has 4,000 or 4,200 pound rated axles, but you can find that exact information on your trailer.

Also - that 8800 is max. Have you weighed it loaded for camping? I'm 1600# below my GVWR fully loaded (including water and propane) for camping. You might see the same. Good luck!

Looks like I am wrong. LT tires do not need derating. So time to reevaluate.

My trailer has 4400 lb axles per the trailer sticker.

I have not weighed my trailer other than knowing it is allegedly 6569 lb from the factory per the weight sticker.
With a 54 gal fresh tank @ 8.34 lb/gal I'm looking at another 450 lbs of base weight, so 7000 lbs as I usually run with a full fresh tank (and the rest empty).
I'm not full time and travel light otherwise so yea, I'm likely well within spec of any of these tires.
But I would still feel most comfortable accounting for 8800 lbs.
