Mounting tire to 65 Caravel

Getting ready to mount my spare tire to my 65 Caravel, was thinking about mounting on rear bumper and have seen many done this way. My question is, would the extra bouncing weight on the back bumper cause possible frame separation?

and no problems with the frame by using the tounge.

Yes, there are a couple of years that it was done in the '62/63 range, but it's not recommended. The extra weight bouncing around back there is not good. There are several threads with options for "spare tire carrier (or mount)" options that you can find with the search tool.

Ours has the tongue mount (like Mark's) and I actually detailed it in CADD for someone some time ago, here's a link: http://www.airforums.com/forum...tml#post150186

Just for the record, the trailer pictured is not mine. But I wish it was.

Eventually I will mount my tire on the tounge, but lots of things are ahead of that on the long restoration list.

I vote no on the rear bumper mount. I included a few pics of my solution.

It works well and I can still remove the propane tanks to get them filled. I usually only take one tank off at a time to fill. Even if I took both tanks off the tire would only move as far as the eye in the bolt will let it.

You don't really want to attach anything to the rear bumper. There is too much risk of damage of some kind to the frame to floor to shell attachment points.

There are larger pics in the "my photos section"

I like the idea in post #6, but I see a lot of $$ wrapped up in mounting a spare tire. Plus 90% of the weight is still on the very end of the trailer.

Your running an eye bolt thru the tire to the vertical rod that is used to hold the propane tanks, is that what I'm seeing............thanks

Yes, that is correct. I have a regular nut and fender washer on one side and a fender washer and a wing nut on the other. It pretty much stays right where it sits. The tire just sits on the frame/tounge. My vertical rod is about one to two sizes bigger than what is offered at the RV store. So I figure it can handle what little stress there is on it. I still have to get a cover for the tire. When my trailer is parked it faces south.

Spare Tire

We just installed a spare tire rack under the front of our 1969 27' Overlander behind the trailer hitch. Seems that there was a good space for it there and eliminates carrying it in the truck or mounting on rear which we think a previous owner did. We did not want the weight of that tire bouncing on the back of our trailer and besides mounting it there would interfere with the access to the battery, etc.

Mine is half inch too. You must have the original rod. The newer ones are a bit smaller in Dia. Something like 3/8 or 7/16

I would also recommend a tire cover for your spare. The spare will last longer because it doesn't get hit with the sunlight. UV could spell trouble.
