My sentiments exactly.

The other thing I've gotten past is blacking out the white letters on the inside . Only I notice, and after a few months, the brake dust covers them anyway.

Gotta decide by 0800 tomorrow.

Bob put one side of trailer letters in(door entry side) for the 64 year old in you and other side(street side )out for the 18year old in you, the reason you put the door side letters in is you don't want your wife to complain about the raised lettering that is seen every time you get into the trailer, you don't want any friction in close quarters , but when your feeling a bit on the older side with sore joints etc... Walk over to the street side and voila your 18 again!

I had a 1973 Dodge Charger with the BFGoodrich Radial T/A's, raised white letters out... That thing looked sweet. I understand the "cool" thing today is black sidewalls, but that doesn't make it tacky. It's just out of style right now. Trust me, in 10 years, people will be begging for raised white letters again... I'm sure the twenty something's of today will look back on the hipster glasses and see them the same way we look at polyester and bell bottoms today, but doesn't mean they weren't the in thing to do at the time.

The best argument I see against making them is adding to the cost of the tire. Nobody today puts the letters out, so why the expense to manufacture them?

And, for a brief period recently, those polyester shirts and bell bottom pants were the cool thing to wear amongst the college crowd... So, I'm figuring the raised white letters with your car jacked up on air shocks can't be far behind.

-Red, still hep to the whitewall scene daddio...

The raised white letters on the Michelin LTs are a lot more subtle than the big white letters back in the 70s. Simple thin white lines outlining the brand name. Not that tacky, kind of attractive.

Scamp, not a bad idea! Feed both inner selves!

My tires are being mounted on the wheels as I speak. IN.

If fashion trends change in a few years, I'll remount them OUT.

I am on my second set of Michelins. I ran the first set with the raised lettering in because I was worried that in some local places I might not be legal running them and I did not want to advertise it. The second set is mounted with the lettering out. All I can say is that they seem to pull just as well each way. I like them better with the lettering out.

Question What are we talking about?

OK, I have a question. What are we talking about? It seems to me reading the posts that there are two or more different subjects being discussed.

One being in or out as in or out of style. This is what I'm posting about.

The other being in or out as embossed versus recessed.

Another possibility, mount the tires with white lettering showing or hidden

Which are we supposed to be talking about?

Ken:

The thread is about mounting the raised white letters on the Michelin LTXs outward, where they can be seen, or inward where they can't.

A throwback to our youth.

I can see how the thread title could be confusing.

OK, no problem for me then, as I have fairly new ones on both truck and trailer. They have no white lettering. (thank goodness)

Save a few bucks and order black-wall tires without the raised white letters. Problem solved. I like the clean look (without raised white letters) on Airstreams.

I wish they made a whitewall tire. I think they look classy on an older trailer.

In ... out ....in ...out .... in / out ...repeat as necessary!

Ask your wife if still confused.

That taken directly from the North Dakota tire / manual ... or, the eastern MT manual ... or, the Idaho manual ...or, the Siberian manual ...YMMV

Does this really make a difference???
Well, the letters on the outside are more exposed to external moving air(not shielded by the axles and hub assembly like the inside area); hence more drag ... and, the tires will wear out faster, too ...

I had a '73 Plymouth Duster (the slant 6 225, not the real one with the 8 cylinder :-) ). I had white lettered tires on it which officially made me cool.

Today, I proudly do the same on my trailer so I can remain as cool as I always was. :-)

And if I could find whitewalls, I'd go with them even on the 2012.

My trailer. My tires. My rules.

:-)

(I really don't take this as seriously as I'm making it sound...but I do love how rabidly anti-letters the crowd is! :-D ).

Looks good! It's like a good friend of mine said once, when I was telling him how I would set up his boat, "When YOU pay for it, you can tell me how to do it..."

-Red, kind of digging the white letter scene...

My first inclination was to have them installed with the white lettering facing in. However, the date codes are on the same face of the tire with the RWLs and I wanted the date code to be easily visible so it would be harder to convince myself the tires are younger than they actually are when it comes time to replace them.

Now that I've had them on for a while with the RWLs facing out, I rather like it. I hadn't thought about the fact that it's a very 70s look, but a number of people have commented on it, from "I didn't know Michelin made trailer tires" to a few trucker types along the lines of "I'll bet you have less trouble with trailer tires than most of these yahoos driving 80 mph on cheap trailer tires."
