Seems to me that you don't want to inflate the tire more than is required to safely care the load. Inflating more than is required only makes for a harsher ride and that is a whole other discussion.(rivets etc.).

All,

I have been following this thread for some time. Two questions come to mind:

1. Has any one running Maxis tires had any problems? (I assume no..)

2. Does anyone running maxis load range D tires notice a stiffer ride? I get the impression per the article quoted from Silvertwinkie that they may. However I do not necessarily believe everything our friends that manufacture tires say - "nylon caps produced a more rigid tire with a rougher ride." My ride is stiff enough as it is now and I do not want to make it any worse.

I have a 19' bambi CCD and considering that I have a single axle I plan on replacing my Goodyear Marathons this year with a pair of Maxis tires. My Marathons are 4 years old this April.

Thanks

I think Eric's concern was going to the E rated Maxxis rather than sticking with the D's. I don't believe you should be concerned about this assuming you stick to the D rated tires. If the nylon cap keeps those belts from squirming, all the more to it. At this point my slide out is the heaviest trailer that Airstream builds on a tandem axle. After the failure of a Marathon, I felt the extra weight capacity that the E rated tires provided was worth the upgrade.

If you know the GVWR of your unit, then add the weight rating of the D tires which is 2540lbs per tire x 4. If the total weight of your 31 footer is close to or exceeds what 2540x4 equals, then you'd need to go to the E tires.

My guess is that a 31' 70s unit weighs less than my 2004 25' (6300lbs), so I'm thinking you'd be well under the max total capacity of the D rated tires....

Thanks that what I was thinking, D rating. Maxxis ST225/75R15.

Here in the Houston area I see that Discount Tire has the Maxxis tires. Now all I need to do is decide if I need the axles replaced which I am looking into now. Of course aluminum wheels would be great to. When does the government "stimulus" check get here?

I think in April or May...I wonder if we'll have to pay tax on it next tax year.

If so, would that mean it's only really $420? That's not even enough to get 4 new Maxxis tires!

The tires can fail without warning from what I've read. JCanavera, whom I know is up on all the maint on his unit had a tire fail. I would not worry a lot, but I am planning on replacing my 4 year old tires this summer, even though they look fine. Looks can sometimes be deceiving.

You can get 4 ST 225 75 15 D Maxxis M8008 ST Radials tires from Discount Tire Direct for under 400.00. I bought 4 last spring (still sitting in the garage on new wheels) - they were 369.00 delivered to the house. That includes 10.00 per tire for the extended warranty.

They don't show Maxxis on the web site but they had them when I called.

I got my spare from Unser tires online. They cut me a good deal. I have the D rated 235's on my Avion. They're working great so far. A really nice running tire. I don't think you'll go wrong with them.

No, but you are near the end of the life cycle of those tires. Mine were manufactured in '03 and I had planned to replace them before my first outing this spring. Unfortunately as Eric noted above, I lost a chunk of tread returning from the Branson rally last fall. That accelerated my replacement schedule and I did the replacement prior to my Florida trip in November.

Thanks for the info Gary. I will give them a call. Looking at the site, if I need them installed and want any road hazard type warranty, it's $30/tire, so my total cost, unless I can find a place to install them for less than $20/tire is going to be about $120.00 more than the current delivererd cost.

I may call the local shop to see if it's any better on the mounting, going through the retail store and having them do the ordering and such.

I guess we made a mistake buying Marathons in June of '06. We figured there are around 6000 mi. on them after Ike found a bulge in the outer sidewall after we arrived in Gulf Shores. We now have a new tire and the others have been checked on the inner sidewalls as well. Should those tires be renamed Scare-a- thon???
