Maxxis ST Tires Test in Trailer Life Sept 2016
The new September 2016 issue of Trailer Life has a road test of the Maxxis ST tires starting on page 39.
It is pretty positive & explains the reasons why they're not like the Chinese junk tires, nor GYM etc. ST tires out there today.
Of course, this is not news to those of us using them on our vehicles.
For the record, we have Maxxis ST225/75R15D 8PR on our 1960 Avion T20 since July 2012 with zero problems, as well as their LT205/70R14C 8PR 105 tires on our 1988 VW Vanagon CamperGL Westfalia since March of 2015 - & these are the only tires out there which I could find in the stock 14" VW wheel size which meets or exceeds the OE tire specs originally supplied by Michelin & are NLA since the 1990s (the Maxxis exceed the 98 Load Rating of the OEs).
For those unfamiliar with Maxxis &/or are ST tire naysayers - read it, it's a good informational article with a consolidated size & load ratings table.
PS - Now the question is whether or not Camping World - which is part of the GS/CW/TL/etc. conglomerate - will start to offer Maxxis tires in their stores/shops, or continue to only peddle inferior GYM & off-brand ST tires!?
Cheers!
Tom

Burned through the factory installed GYM's and replaced them with Maxxis Tow Masters. In fact I replaced the first set of Maxxis last year, right before I sold my 2006 Safari, with another set and the only reason I replaced them was due to being about 7 years old. We towed the 06 about 100k, so the tires got a good workout.

I replaced the GYM tires on my 2016 AS with Maxxis E rated tires before our recent 10,120 mile trip cross country, filled them with nitrogen & traveled in extreme high temperatures cross the US without a problem, I inflated them to 75psi & never lost a pound of pressure. I will say I will not run ST tires of any kind beyond 3 years.

I really had hoped that my purchase of E rated Maxxis tires was the answer to the belt separation issues that showed on my original Marathons. While I got 8 months more of life from the Maxxis, I didn't feel that belt separations that occurred at the beginning of season 4 of use justified continued use of this brand. I just think it's a combination of age and the heavy weight of my slide out that exposes ST tires to a limited lifespan. Jumping to 16" LT Michelin tires was just more cost justified than changing out ST tires on a more frequent basis.

That's alright.
I'll pass.
I'm good.
I'm convinced there is really no such thing as a good quality, long life ST tire.
I'll stick with my 16" LT tires.
16" wheels and LT tires: $1,400-
Peace of mind: Priceless-

Well there you go, from 2 "experts" with absolutely zero substantiation.
I disagree, as do others on here with rights to our own educated opinions.
No reason to try to kill the conversation of others who may be interested, just because you don't like ST's.
If you don't like ST's, then why bother with this negative stuff in the first place anyway!?
After all, this is NOT a poll to see who likes ST or LT.
I really do not care if you don't like STs or not, & per my OP, Maxxis also makes an excellent LT line for you hard-liners!

And for others who may want to look further into the Maxxis ST's, here's the link -
http://www.maxxis.com/catalog/tire-1...t-radial-m8008
And whether you're an ST or LT tire types, here's their dealer locator -

(you may have to change it to your own zip code)
Cheers!

Bought new 2016 AS 27 FB.
Replaced its Marathons with E-rated Maxxis tires.
After selling the Marathons & exchanging them with Maxxis tires (mounted, balanced, & with metal inflation stems), net approx. $225 out of pocket.
AS now has over 10K miles with no problems with & no additional air added to Maxxis tires.
If problems arise, I'll replace with 16 inch rims & Michelin LT tires.
Meanwhile, I've used a portion of the approx. net $1,200 I would have spent on the rims & Michelins to buy an 8-wheel TPMS, for approx. $375.
Time will tell.

Yeah, I don't fully understand the affair that many have with the Michelin Man. And I couldn't see any rationale for dumping a set of brand new 15" wheels and tires on my new 2015 AS based on others bad experiences.
I have had three trailers in the past 10 years, all of which came with GYM's. They sufficed, but bought Maxxis tires when they wore out. Now, I average about 15K miles a year on the trailers so my tires tend to wear out before they can dry out or blow out. I have never experienced a tread separation, blow out or flat. On trailer or truck.
What I don't understand is all of the stories about ST tires and people that have had several, multiple tire failures. Perhaps it may be you and not the tire that has issues.
Anyway, I may look at an LT tire in the future simply because I tow at 60-65 and don't like the fact that ST tires are limited to 65mph. But that is why I also believe in using tire monitors.
Some tires may be better than others, some wear faster than others, but I think it all depends on how well you take care of them.

It's important to remember that safe towing on ST tires requires a maximum speed of no more than 65mph. That along with proper inflation and changing out the tires at least every 4 years (I prefer 3years) will most likely make for no tire trouble on the road. Some prefer the 16" rim/Michelin combination & that's fine, but other like myself are willing to run with the 15" rims and a quality tire like Maxxis. Their are many more TT & 5th wheel trailers out there with ST tires than LT tires. I respect anyone's choice, after all it their choice not yours.

For all the folks who use LT tires because of the "65 mph limit" on ST's, you will be glad to know that it is no longer an issue:
NOTE: During the second half of 2015, a Service Description was branded on each Marathon Radial's sidewall, identifying the tire's Load Index and L-Speed Rating (75 mph - 120 kmh).
Per a note on the Marathon page at The Tire Rack.

My "substantiation" is personal experience with ST tire failures- twice.
That's all the substantiation I need.
There won't be any need for a third failure.

My experience was 21 tires in 9 years. One blowout with wheel well and skin damage and numerous tread separations. These were GYM, Carlisle, and Maxxis in that order. Two years on Michelin 16' LTX.

Just a little tid bit, in order for a tire to have an ST rating it must be rated to at least 65 mph. That doesn't mean that all ST tires have a speed rating of 65 mph. My ST225/75R15 Carlisle radial trail hd's have an m speed rating which is 81 mph. That combined with Discount tires warranty I'm not considered with a tire failure.

Hi, I have the same tires as SpletKay06 and from the same company. So far my tires have only been on one trip; It was our 2015 cross country trip of over 13,000 miles.
I did have four [Canadian] GYM failures, all caught in time. I have never had a flat, never had a blow out, and never used my spare. My Canadian GYM's were all replaced with Chinese tires that had no failures. These were replaced due to age. So here I am with Carlisles.
