I just looked at the sidewall the sidewall on a D ( 8 ply)rated Marathon

Tread is 6 ply 2 polyester, 2 steel, 2 nylon. Sidewall is 2 ply polyester

Not commenting on the quality of the tire one way or the other however a new salesman may be in order.
As others have said, also check the date of manufacture

Interestingly enough, we were just at The Rally in Louisville this weekend.. (Class A heaven, if you are into that sort of thing..) and talked with the Goodyear rep. They had a Marathon sitting in the display. When I asked about the "problems" with Chinese marathons, he said that the "rumored" problems with those tires, were due to improper inflation and user error. I kid you not, that's what he said, when I then pressed him as to WHY they had brought production back to the USA if there was no problem with the Chinese built tires..

well, he had no answer for that, other then to reiterate that there was "no quality problems" with the Chinese built tires. He did quite the song and dance while telling me that too.

I went to the Good Year supplier and looked at the tires. They had a "Made in China" stamp. I asked the guy the difference between ply ratings and actual ply count and he said there's NO difference, so I looked at the tires and they said 5 ply tread and three ply sidewall. I showed him the tire stamp and he was bent over the tire blowing spit bubbles when I left.

A couple hours later the guy called me and said they found four Marathons with "Made in USA" stamp. I asked him for the date of manufacture and he didn't know. I stopped at Sam's on the way home and that guy said Wal Mart carries Marathons. He suggested I put Marathons back on the trailer. At least he didn't laugh. I didn't stop at Wal Mart because I bought two bags of frozen corn at Sam's and I wanted to get them home to my freezer before they turned into mush.

I haven't had this much fun since my last colonoscopy.

I will always choose a tire search over a colonoscopy.

this line of questiong is just trying to REwrite history, or cluelessness.

MOST of the reported issues were from ~2000-2005 and on tires produced BEFORE that time.

which is WAY before production was moved to china,

for goodness sake READ some the old threads here on this...

or go to ANY of the 'i hate goodyear sites' and read.

those reportedly problematic tires were produced in the usa and canada...

check the record on this.

why would u expect a sales REP to know top level biz decisions driven by GOVERNMENT actions ?

in early 08 pricing for tires began a climb (worldwide) , partly related to crude oil pricing ...

in the FALL of 09 OUR LEADERS imposed a 35% tariff on tires made in china.

THAT 1/3 higher price was passed on to us (folks living in the US) and resulted in the pricing we 'enjoy now'...

a gym went from under 80$ to 130$ or more...

so there was no ADVANTAGE to gy producing them in china anymore.

this is incredibly basic stuff,

but then again so is the birthplace RECORD of the gym during the 'defective years...

Absolutely sure however the tire is fairly old. It may be that they were done differently by different mfg. sources. Definitely says 6 ply , 2 each steel, polyester, nylon

Still learning. Good Year store has Marathons dated 18-10 made in USA. Wal Mart has Marathons dated 19-10 made in China. I smell a woodchuck in the wood pile.

The Marathons I bought from Tire Rack were made in the 26th week of 2010, in the US.

Maxxis makes a E range tire in that size (225 75 15) of which I have a pair 0n my trailer after blowing out 3 explodeathons (AKA Marathons). I am very happy with them. I check the pressure every morning and feel for bulges after my previous experiences.

Just a quick note and observation about the Michelin XPS Rib tires.

I have a set on my Sprinter service van, and they are approaching 60,000. Just had them rotated and re-balanced, and the maximum weight on any of the 4 was 2.25 ounces, which is nothing really.

They are wearing very well, and I expect to have them on for another 15-20K, given the tread depth that is now present. I run them all day while driving cross country (which I am doing as I write this) OK, I'm stopped for the night!

But watching the pressures go up 8-10 PSI on each tire from the morning's cooler temps, these are one tough tire! Gene is probably correct though, as you don't really need a tire like this on a trailer as they will age out long before you wear them out!

I went to the MAXXIS (sp) brand after a blowout of the standard issue, Marathon by Goodyear. Nearly tore the rear lower panel behind the second axle, curb side. Had it been the street side, I might have lost the dump valve connection. Not planning to go back to the standard issue.

Hey Guys - I couldn't agree more -- The Michelin XPS Rib is probably overkill --BUT -- i did not enjoy changing the blowout along I-77 with the trucks blowing by at 70MPH + -- I was also lucky that the Airstream did not suffer any damage from the blowout --I really like the service dept in Jackson Center but I would not like to replace a wheel well -- and then I just freaked out to find the other 3 had belt separaton also -- I'll get over the expense of the XPS Rib change, if I never have another blowout....i won't say that this is the way everyone should go, but at least I feel a little safer -- I didn't buy the Airstream to park it and look at it....

The LTX also increases as much or more and seems to perform exactly the same. When we travel across radically different climates—from mid 40's in the am, 100 in the afternoon—pressure can go up 15 lbs and I have to stop and let air out of each tire.

Does your trailer ride the same now as with the D tires? Some guy said going to E from D tires may make for a harsh ride and popped rivets.

Because the TPMS keeps flashing and making noise. I can stop the noise, but the flashing is too much.

So far as changing from D to E, depends on the tire. Michelins are very smooth riding tires. On our truck we went from Goodrich C to Michelin E and it rode better with the Michelins.

You always check tires cold as when they are hot they will have more pressure. You can use nitrogen if you dont like the higher pressure.

Tire pressure should level out after 1.5 hours steady state driving. Gene, are yours really gaining 15-psi? Sounds too much from cold to hot.

One of the Marathons separated on my 2005 Bambi 16'. America's Tire said it happens all the time and they recommend Carlisle, which is what I have now.
