It looks like Goodyear has maybe learned a lesson about having tires manufactured in China. Yesterday I checked with Discount Tire here in Austin and they confirmed that Goodyear is now manufacturing their Marathon tires in the USA. I hope they have resolved the tread separation issue. I plan to put a set of the new Marathons on my 2005 Classic next week.

I'm gonna keep my 15" wheels. I just talked to the Good Year sales guy. He didn't know the tires were ever made in China and he doesn't have a clue where they're made now. He says he has like 38 Good Year Marathon tires in my size in an 8 ply "D" rating. He says they're not just 8 ply rated but they're an actual 8 ply tire. $150 each mounted, balanced and taxed. He says he just put 4 on a trailer headed to Oklahoma and they made it to Kansas before one of em blew. Great sales guy! Hahaha!

Of course when you get new tires make sure you check the manufacture date before you pay for them. Lots of 2-3 year old tires out there.

My Carlisles were dated 1810.
Question: So how do bias ply tires fare in comparison to the radials? Do they blow out as much?
Here is a quick informational document I found on Carlisles website.

clearly this guy is missing a LOT of cluez...

gyms were made in china from ~late 06 through late 09.

NONE of these radial tires are 'actual 8 ply'

So true.

I went to 16" wheels and Michelin LTX M&S tires. I did not chose the Rib tire because it's a commercial truck tire. It's meant to be used for high mileage local trucks and to be retreaded a couple of times before it's too old. The LTX is an excellent tire and will probably last to about the right time to change tires because of age.

Some Airstreams will not fit a 16" tireódepends on the wheel cutout and measurement must be done very carefully, over and over. The reason some of us have gone to 16" is because Michelin no longer makes the right tire size in 15".

Michelins cost more but they last longer and ride better so they are actually cheaper. They don't lose air like Marathons do.

They have between 13,000 and 14,000 miles on them and at the rate they are wearing I think they will last at least 55,000 miles.

I believe Airstream stopped buying wheels from Greenball in 2008 and has another supplier now. I got mine through Airstream after we made a deal. The clearcoat on my original wheels (probably from Greenball) was coming off and they looked pretty bad.

Some replace Marathons with Maxxis ST tires and seem happier. The discussion over ST vs. LT tires is endless.

I just looked at the sidewall the sidewall on a D ( 8 ply)rated Marathon

Tread is 6 ply 2 polyester, 2 steel, 2 nylon. Sidewall is 2 ply polyester

Not commenting on the quality of the tire one way or the other however a new salesman may be in order.
As others have said, also check the date of manufacture

Interestingly enough, we were just at The Rally in Louisville this weekend.. (Class A heaven, if you are into that sort of thing..) and talked with the Goodyear rep. They had a Marathon sitting in the display. When I asked about the "problems" with Chinese marathons, he said that the "rumored" problems with those tires, were due to improper inflation and user error. I kid you not, that's what he said, when I then pressed him as to WHY they had brought production back to the USA if there was no problem with the Chinese built tires..

well, he had no answer for that, other then to reiterate that there was "no quality problems" with the Chinese built tires. He did quite the song and dance while telling me that too.

I went to the Good Year supplier and looked at the tires. They had a "Made in China" stamp. I asked the guy the difference between ply ratings and actual ply count and he said there's NO difference, so I looked at the tires and they said 5 ply tread and three ply sidewall. I showed him the tire stamp and he was bent over the tire blowing spit bubbles when I left.

A couple hours later the guy called me and said they found four Marathons with "Made in USA" stamp. I asked him for the date of manufacture and he didn't know. I stopped at Sam's on the way home and that guy said Wal Mart carries Marathons. He suggested I put Marathons back on the trailer. At least he didn't laugh. I didn't stop at Wal Mart because I bought two bags of frozen corn at Sam's and I wanted to get them home to my freezer before they turned into mush.

I haven't had this much fun since my last colonoscopy.

I will always choose a tire search over a colonoscopy.

this line of questiong is just trying to REwrite history, or cluelessness.

MOST of the reported issues were from ~2000-2005 and on tires produced BEFORE that time.

which is WAY before production was moved to china,

for goodness sake READ some the old threads here on this...

or go to ANY of the 'i hate goodyear sites' and read.

those reportedly problematic tires were produced in the usa and canada...

check the record on this.

why would u expect a sales REP to know top level biz decisions driven by GOVERNMENT actions ?

in early 08 pricing for tires began a climb (worldwide) , partly related to crude oil pricing ...

in the FALL of 09 OUR LEADERS imposed a 35% tariff on tires made in china.

THAT 1/3 higher price was passed on to us (folks living in the US) and resulted in the pricing we 'enjoy now'...

a gym went from under 80$ to 130$ or more...

so there was no ADVANTAGE to gy producing them in china anymore.

this is incredibly basic stuff,

but then again so is the birthplace RECORD of the gym during the 'defective years...

Absolutely sure however the tire is fairly old. It may be that they were done differently by different mfg. sources. Definitely says 6 ply , 2 each steel, polyester, nylon

Still learning. Good Year store has Marathons dated 18-10 made in USA. Wal Mart has Marathons dated 19-10 made in China. I smell a woodchuck in the wood pile.
