If you were looking for another reason to ditch your GYMs

I went over to our trailer today to install the batteries, which have been in my garage for the winter. While there I did some other stuff, to start to get ready for our first WBCCI rally at the end of the month in Hood River. Checking out my tires, I see they have a manufacture date of 32 14, or August 2014. Then I notice the sidewall cracks on one of them. Just one, but it has about six curved cracks radiating out in sortof the center area of the sidewall. So that's it for these tires, they will be replaced next week. Original 15 inch GYMs, less than 4 yrs old.

Good catch!
Saved yourself from having to deal with it on the road, and possible damage.
Don't forget the spare.

Good experience thus far with the GY endurance tire it you are looking to stay with 15” rims. Endurance is a completely different animal.

So those cracks alone tell you the tire is the problem?

I would bet that was the result of the actual cause.

Those cracks inform me, along with all the reported issues with the GYMs, and the fact that Goodyear no longer makes them, that it's time to change out the tires. I could continue to use them, and I might be ok. But I'm not willing to chance significant damage to our trailer, and the ensuing down time, just to save $500.00 bucks, for a extra year.

I don't disagree that it's time to replace the tires, but the inference that there is some inherent defect in the tire is a leap.

We have had many many problem-free miles with GYM's.

That being said, our next set of 6 tires will be the GYE's.

Thanks that answers my question if I should replace my 2015 GYM before the international rally

tires

just replaced my GYM with GYE. Hope all the good reports play out well for me.
kept my original unused spare tire GYM to use as a 2nd spare tire for my eventual trip to Alaska. So i'll have anew GYE as primary spare and a unused GYM to back up the GYE if needed.

I did not replace the spare. I figure that as it's never been used, if something happens and I need it, it will do to get me to the next tire store. It will be 5 years old next August, and I'll replace it then.

Gye

I am pleased to report that my new GYE performed flawlessly.
6813 miles in one trip. I started the trip at 76 psi all around.
Ended the trip at 76 psi all aound. 30 days and never add a single psi to any of my tires.
I was on some terrible roads due to road destruction (constructions). Popped 1 interior rivet, but I popped 2 the last rip in 1/2 the time with my GYM.
I give them an "A"
They seem to ride a little bit harder but I guess the is to be expected at an increase of 12 psi/tire.Could just be the bumpy roads we were on.
Seem to be wearing evenly.

It's not just GYM's....

DW's MB...22k Continental's...👎 Replaced with new Michelin Premier LTX

Dry rot.
One of the reasons the AS tires are off in Winter and covered during the Season. The GYM's we took off were 8yrs old with no rot.

Milo,
First thing I noticed when the GYE's when delivered, how robust the construction and a much stiffer sidewall.
Nice to hear your 👍 on them, looking forward to our first trip. 😎

I also just put 7,000 on a set of GYE running at 75 lbs
These tires are built much better than the marathons and I also give a thumbs up rating
Keep your 15 inch wheels and go with the GYE tires

Not sure about dry rot. This looks like the beginnings of tread seperation. Doesn't dry rot cracking usually show up more on the tire sidewall?
