Over my carreer I estimate I was involved in 20,000+ tire "autopsies" and for the last 10 years or so of my job my primary duty was failed tire inspection where I was the last person to get involved when others could not identify the Root Cause reason for a failure.
I had to issue written reports that were sent to engineers at GM, Ford, Chrysler, Honda, Toyota, BMW, Porsche etc so simply providing "customer satisfaction" and giving them a replacement tire was not an option. They wanted proof.
My inspections involved not just visual inspection but sometimes X-Ray, Holography, drum testing, chemistry and even Electron Microscope were tools involved.
I believe that in over 98% of the cases we were able to present physical evidence that supported the theory of why a given failure occurred so to me, "no reason" simply means that the person doing the inspection did not have the training or tools available to learn the real reason for a specific failure.

I am providing this information in an effort to demonstrate that failed tire analysis is not a simple task but takes decades of experience and access to numerous tools so a fact based conclusion can be reached.

I do not believe in Magic but in Science and physical evidence. The overwelming reason for tire failure is loss of proper inflation pressure with punctures, cuts, valve leaks and other forms of damage being the reason for the air loss.

Indeed

That lil guy waving @ you on the side of the tire says it all. I gotta go shop on e-bay for a figurine of that guy. With as much $ as I have spent on them, and for as long as I have owned, and been buying them, they should be sending ME one!

Good looking tires mustang. You will truly be a happy camper. Congrats!
Sea ya down the road,
Gavin

Don't forget that if these are "P" type you need to de-rate the load capacity by dividing by 1.1 as P type tires are not intended for trailer application.

All the math has been done. We have over 2,000 miles on this trip with no problems. We did see a 5er on the side of the road in SC with a shredded tire though.

tires

Michelin tires are expensive but they are the best. I have used numerous brands. They have all worn out quickly. So Michelin. Oh, that is a $5,000 body repair. I have not had the body work done yet on mine 1995 because they told me $5000.00 and it is not as bad as your damage.

FYI.
My AS body damage is fixed thanks to the fine workmanship at Out-Of-Doors Mart RV in NC. It's back home now and in the driveway awaiting my new tires and rims.

I've decided to switch to the Michelin Truck LTX M/S2 225/R75/16". Ordered the tires from Tirebuyer.com and Sendel T03 SM rims from Recstuff.com. Paid decent prices for both tires and rims and Michelin has a $70 rebate until May 10th.

The tires have already arrived. If all goes as planned the rims will be here Tuesday and I'll be getting them mounted and installed the middle to end of next week.

I want to especially thank Phoenix for all of his help and advice.

abAs long as you're upgrading the rims & tires, consider adding Centramatics. They will dynamically balance your tire/rim/brakes/hub assembly. Absent proper balance, vibration can do all sorts of nasty stuff, such as loosen rivets, open drawers & cupboards.

Last summer I went whole hog - replaced and upgraded my axles, plus Sendel 16" rims and Michelin LTX225/75R16(E) tires (including the spare) & Centramatics. Have put on about 15,000 miles since - rides smoothly and tows like a dream.

I agree. Lucky for me, they were already on my AS when I bought it from the PO.

I meant to post these earlier. Here are a couple of pictures of the repair and the new rims and tires. I hadn't put my Tire Pressure Monitoring sensors back on the tires yet, in these pictures.

Wow! Those look great on there. I am glad Out Of Doors mart was able to get everything repaired for you. We are on the fence about replacing our new 15" trailer tires with upgraded 16" gear. Every time I see these pictures of new wheels and tires I get the urge to upgrade.

Go for it! I did and the peace of mind knowing that you won't have ST-tire failure (with its associated costs) is worth every penny. Better towing, longer tire life and a lot safer with 16" LT-tires.
