For discussion purposes, how does one explain a failure rate of 55% when running 15-inch ST tires, that drops to zero after switching to 16-inch wheels and LT tires, when nothing else is changed?

The extra 1/2 inch in height allows more air to flow under the trailer, thus keeping the tires cooler, thus avoiding blowouts? You didn't thinlk anyone was going to come up with a reason, did you?

Ken

PS, I am convinced mine is more that 1/2 inch higher. However I'm not going to swap back in order to measure it.

Just purchased an 06 25ccd, and replaced the original tyres, due to age. Had 5 goodyear marathons installed. After about 500 miles we blew a left rear.
All tyres were at proper inflation, and not run over 65mph. After about another thousand miles, we found another tyre starting to seperate.
Needless to say we are looking for another set of tyres, that will hold up for more than 1500 miles. Would like to use michelin, but can not seem to find anything in the 225/17/15 range.
Any suggestions would be helpful.

Well that pretty much blows the "maybe they are making them better now idea" that has been floating around here lately. 235/75/15 will fit. 16" wheels is an option. You need to look at your load ratings and whether you need c, d, or e rated tires.

These aren't a cheap china tire, give them a try.

we got our new to us 2003 Safari 23 a year ago in April.

Took a couple of short trips on what I believe were the original 14 inch GYMs. Had one tire that picked up a nail and i took it to local (not national chain) tire guy to see if i could get it plugged. He took one look at it and said he would not repair it because it was showing signs of tread separation.

I looked around and in 14 inch tires didn't have a lot of choice, so i went back with 14 GYM's mostly because I wasn't sure that 15's would fit. So long story short we have taken about 6 trips of 200 miles or less as well as two of about 1500 miles in that period of time, running the GYM's at the specified 50 lbs and even sitting in storage for a couple of months at a time, haven't lost more than a lb of air.

Not sure if that proves anything one way or the other, but just our anecdotal information.

Thanks Dana for your anecdotal information.

We also have a 23' Safari with the original 14" Goodyear Marathon tires that are now going on 6 years old and will be replacing them with a new set of GYM's by next month before we resume our typical fall-winter-spring camping season.

Our tires have done well with our routine of going on monthly 200 mile round-trips, mostly from San Diego to our nearby desert areas, from October through April, and one last trip of the season to a nearby state beach in May. And like you, I make sure they are at the specified pressure of 50 psi cold just before starting and I continuously monitor them with PressurePro tire sensors. When the trailer is parked, the tires are immediately covered (sun protection). We typically travel at the stated speed limit for vehicles towing trailers in California (55 mph) and rarely go over 62 mph. Upon return to San Diego, our trailer and tires rest on plywood boards placed on top of the cement pavement and the tires are covered.

So... knock on wood.. we will continue to rely on Goodyear Marathons... and take the usual precautions!

Hi, just to mention that of the four Goodyear Marathons that went bad on my trailer, [two in about three years and the other two in about seven years] were all made in Canada. So far so good with the three Chinese Goodyear Marathons that I have on the ground now. [I have one Carlisle that I bought in Alaska]

Note: spare tire has never been used.

Summer44,
The only 15" Michelin that might work for you is the Michelin LTX M/S2 P235/75/15XL. I have these on my trailer that has the same GVWR as your 25' CCD. There are many threads about them here for you to read. The Continental Vanco 2 is a very good tire as well.

Here's what we put on our 27 FB a year ago with good results so far:

BF Goodrich Radial Long Trail T/A Tour
P235/75R15/XL 108T
Tire Size: Side Wall: Service Description: Mileage Warranty: UTQG:
P235/75R15/XL OWL 108T 60,000 580AB

XL means extra load.

These sound perfect..
In 14" you might be able to get a Michelin dealer to order Agilis:

Agilis | Michelin Tires

Also in that size you could use Hankook RA08 or the above mentioned Kumho 857. All of these mentioned are rated as light truck tires, so they have a higher speed rating than ST tires.

Thanks gmw, I hope to get a few more years out of the GYMs. But I'm definitely going to get away from them.. Eventually

I think the bottom line here is: Most people are having blow outs with ST tires (NOT ALL) I didn't on my Carlise's and they are 7 years old and over 10,000 miles. But they have some bad wear on them.

So why would you want to take a chance on a blow out and $$$$ for repair, when people running LT tires are not reporting BLOW OUTS..

I an switched to 16" rims with Michelins. It cost me just over $1300.00 but I won't be shelling out a deductible to get the trailer fixed when An ST tires does blow.

I also have a tire monitoring system for $260.00 To me this is all worth the money. I have hundreds of hours into my remodel and don't want to have to fix the trailer due to a tire separation at 65 mph

Well, you guys have got to me. Perfectly good GYM's on new wheels from the factory without any trouble, but I'm believing Airstream installed these for general weekend, vacation use. Over the total production it keeps prices down and still serves most customers well. That makes sense.

But we travel extensively to places (mountains, deserts, narrow back roads with little shoulder, long bridges, costal highways) where a blowout not be good. I'll call it insurance and sell the like new 15" wheel/GYM combo we have (anyone interested?).

I want the Eddie Bauer Michelin on Sendel T02 wheels (6 bolt, 0 offset) to keep the original FC appearance. Is the correct tire LTX M/S LT225/75 R16E ?

Michelin LTX M/S LT225/75 R16E is the tire that we put on Lucy in November of 2010. Since that time they have logged right at 35,000 miles. We have experienced no tire problems, and they never seem to lose any air pressure. They also have no discernible tread wear. After my horrible ST tire experiences, I could not be more pleased.

I took this photo of the tread wear a few moments ago.

Say, have you noticed the new A/S Eddie Bower edition has 16" Michelins on them.

We have Carlisle 15" tires on ours. Our long-term plan is to buy 16" wheels and LT tires for it, just to avoid the headache, and our wheels aren't in great cosmetic shape anyway. We've had two flat tires in the one year we've owned the trailer, but neither of those were due to poor tire manufacturing - one was due to a screw in the tread, the other was a blowout on a tire that turned out to be 8 years old instead of the 3 we were led to believe (I hate it when the date codes are on the inside).

I am taking my old rims and Carlisle tires off today, and putting the new 16" rims and Michelin tires on.. I had no problems with my Carlisle's and they are 7 years old with well over 10,000 + miles. There is some wear on them though. I to didn't want to have to worry about tires again either.
