GYM Tire Question

Attached is a picture of a GYM on my 25FB. There is an indentation in the sidewall (or bulges on either side?) that I was curious if anyone has any idea what it may be (or if it's a problem). Sorry about the lousy picture, it's the best I could get with my cell phone but it is the light are above the "A".
Bought the trailer used (16 months old based on original delivery date) but the tires do look like they have some miles on them. Any ideas what this may be and if so, is it a problem?

Thanks,
Ron

I had the same "indentation" on my GYM's ... one did blow out but I don't know if that indentation was the cause/indicator.

If you were to count up the number of words on the Forum on GYM's I suspect you'd find more concern, comments, disagreement, and consternation on this single topic than any other. Because of it, I pulled off the brand new 15" wheels and GYM's off my brand new 2012 28' Intl and replaced them with 16" wheels and Michelin LT's -- like a lot of other people who had a lot more experience than me. I have put around 4,000 miles on these tires. While I might have been fine with the stock wheels/tires, the peace of mind in going with a larger wheel and a robust tire is beyond the financial investment. Oh, and I met I guy on one of my trips who had TWO (yes TWO) GYM failures in two days. The first one was catastrophic enough to rip out his wheel well and part of the adjoining aluminum panel.

I asked this same question when we first brought out Airstream home. It turns out that these indentations are a normal result of how the radial belts are laid. There is a thread about it somewhere around here.

I replaced my GYM's with Carlisles and the Carlisles don't have this "pattern". Never seen this on my Michelin's, Continentals, or BF Goodrich tires.

And your point?
Those waves will be like that when the tire is bald.

The picture of the indentations on the side wall of your GYM is where they excessively overlapped the radial ply's in the sidewall during manufacturing. You will notice you do not see this on Michelin tires. Michelin has more precision in the manufacturing process and they have quality standards that would not let a tire like this be sold to a customer.

However, the indentations should not make your tire fail. Tire failure can be caused from many things: age, overloading, low air pressure, poor quality rubber compounding, incorrect placement of the components during manufacturing, etc, the list goes on. Tire failure can be determined by an experienced Tire Engineer. Most tire companies have a department dedicated to determine the cause of tire failure. Some Dealers have also been trained to help with this, but I have found that most dealers do not have the expertise to make an engineering evaluation.

I pointed out the same bulge(s) to my local Goodyear Tire shop when replacing and buying tires. The service advisor here said that those bulges are the result of splicing the belt together during manufacturing. While there has to be at least one splice to build the tire, I had Canadian GYM's (the originals from Jackson Center) with as many as 3 and 4 bulges.
