RG,

Another forum member BoldAdventure just swapped his out within the last few weeks and posted photos. I can't remember the name of the thread, but it was something like "help me choose". Maybe he will chime in here. You can always search for posts started by him.

Hard to beat a 70k mile warranty. I have had nothing but Michelin tires on all of my vehicles. Their mud and snow is one helluva tire. The only reason the GYM's were on my 28' was due to the previous owner putting them on there just 4 days before I bought it. Glad to throw those things in the ditch!
Good luck in your re-fit. I should have mine on by late this Saturday afternoon. If you have questions, PM me. I would be happy to help.
Sea ya down the road, and with plenty of tread to spare.
Gavin

We just installed our Yokohama MasterTrack PowerTouring tires on our 1970 Safari. We are still waiting for our new axle so won't be actually traveling until it is installed. These tires are rated at Load E, Speed Q and are 10 ply. 80 psi cold pressure. Size 225 75R 15 on the original steel wheels with hubcaps. Can't imagine that they are too weak in anyway as long as I maintain them properly. One caveat though...this is our first camper. However I am learning a whole bunch by reading this forum. Jacking the single axle AS up with a floor jack and jack stand was a bit of a pucker factor as I could hear the other tire moving on the gravel as I was jacking up the one side. I am doing one side at a time as I don't have any way to lift the entire AS safely. We hope to be safely traveling by the end of May. Tom

I also agree with 16" E rated LT tires, I've havd several trailer in my life time, I have nine now and an lt or e series tire is the only way to go. I have an equiptment trailer that has 40K on a set of BFG's commericials that has had bulldozers 10k lbs to 12k of lumber from speed to 90mph on for 10 years, and I've hit curbs also, but I ALWAYS check my tire pressure cold before I head out 90, psi highway tread is the only way to go! Ha kook also make a good tire 30k on a tool trailer with no problems.. Ps rotate the also!!!

My guess is that the 1970 wheels are more substantial than like rated wheels today, with plenty of margin for this pressure.

There was a time in America when things were overbuilt.

Possibly but radial tires place different loading on the wheels than bias tires do. I remember in the 70's that with the introduction of radial tires wheels needed to be re-designed.
You really do not want to be anywhere near a wheel failure.

We got Michellin LT E rated on our 2015 30' FC right from the factory. I ordered the trailer that way from the dealer and insisted on them, AS had no problem. Just put on the same wheels and tires they put on the Eddie Bauer addition. I had put them on another 30' FC we had and loved them.

How do we get all owners of unite that came with Bias tires read this important safety information?

This ought to be a sticky " If your AS is 19xx or older then you need to read this" or similar.

Agree but then we got hung up on trading off good quality for low price.

We must also realize there continues to be improvements in materials science and the ability to more efficiently engineer components. In effect, in some ways we really do get a better end product, at a lower price.
