Feedback on covering your wheel/tires when not in motion

I'm very interested in getting the forum's feedback on covering their tires when not driving to protect their length of use. I have read many things on this and just wanted to hear if most folks cover their tires when parked, camping and stored.

Our AS is a 1958 but totally uplifted and has new tires.
Thank you!!

We cover when in storage, but don't typically cover our tyres on trips--too much of a pain in the rear to put the covers on, and they get very dirty. They live in a crate in the back of the tow vehicle when not in use. If we were sitting somewhere for a month or so I might consider putting them on.

I live in Florida & tire covers are an absolute necessity during storage. The sun rays cause serious damage to the side wall of the tires causing cracking & eventual total deterioration to the tire in general. In my opinion money well spent.

Do you also cover your car tires? I never understood why trailer tires needed to be protected any more than the TV tires. We only drive 3000 miles a year on my wifes car and have had tires last 7 to 8 years.

Because your car typically frequently rolls on its tires, releasing elastomers, keeping the rubber more supple. If your car sits for long periods in the sun, they should be covered as well

We don't cover the tires. Been there. Done that.
Crawling around under the trailer to install tire covers isn't fun for me.
We use the trailer 11 months- I don't recall camping in February.
It moves too often for covering the tires to be an issue.
I don't cover the tires on my car, pickup, SUV, lawn mower, utility trailer or motorcycle- all of which sit stored/parked as long or longer.

Stationary for long periods, IN THE SUNLIGHT is the issue with covering. Any item stored inside, including an AS, should be exempt from this conversation and comparison.

if your AS sits in the driveway for a week+, and it sits in the sun, why not take the 5 minutes to cover the tires. At our mile-high elevation most of my neighbors' rigs all have covered tires, and I believe it helps prolong the life of them (tires...not neighbors). Your call. jon

My trailer is stored outside on the north side of the house.
No UV rays ever see the tires.
The trailer sits with the rear facing east and the front facing west.
The south side/driver side/street side/left side is shaded by the house.
The sun arcs across the southern sky.
The north side/passenger side/curb side/right side of the trailer never sees direct sunlight while parked at home.

I wouldn't cover in your case, especially since your AS sees a lot of rolling and little sun.

I have a son in columbus Ohio who has a trim shop (owned for 25 years. He made me some snap on covers for my 25 ft AS excella. Six snaps on each side for nice blue material which is lined. When my AS is sitting in my back yard in NC I keep them snapped on. When we go camping we fold them neatly in the tow vehicle. Snap them on when we get to camp site. Nice blue material that gets lots of comments.

We cover at home, not on the road.

Two years in Florida and seven years in NV and AZ. Covered the tires in storage with 303 protectant every 6 months. Kept my ChiCom Goodyear Marathon tires in good shape for seven years until we replaced them with new ones. No issues. We cover them while in the desert if staying more than a few days.

I'm covering ours now beginning with a new set of tires to replace the originals that were 5 years old and never covered. Don't know how much effect not being covered made but I have this observation. Both roadside tires were in the beginning stages of tread separation and were oriented to the eastern sun where I stored the trailer at home. The curbside tires were still in great shape but we're in virtually constant shade. Did the sun exposure make the difference? Who knows, but the experience was enough to convince me to start covering the new tires.

Trailer tires "ST" that are rated HD for load capacity, are usually bias ply, not RADIAL. My experience is that they do depreciated quickly in the sun, if not in regular use.

Any rubber part needs to be flexed to keep its elasticity. (eg. rubber bands) If parked for longer periods, covering the tires, and taking most of the weight off them is worthwhile.

Rubber torsion suspensions also should be used regularly to maintain the rubber torsion characteristics.

Phoenix - all tires are covered.

I am a car collector as well. All tires covered if vehicle is outside except daily drivers.

The cloth tire covers I have, install in seconds. Hook over the top of the tire and they drop down over the tire. They are cheap and EZ, a combination that I prefer. I do replace them every 5 years or so and they do well at tire protection. After 5 year they are pretty beat up by the sun.

Or your cover can be a wooden board or anything fashioned to cover the tire. Doesn't have to be expensive or difficult to install.

I have LT tires on my trailer. I don't know if that makes a difference. I don't know if UV rays degrade ST tires faster. Seems like ST tires only last 3 years for me covered or not covered.
