Distance Between Tires

I now have 3yr old 15 " Marathons and have not had any problems with them. They may have about 12K miles on them. Am considering going to 16" when I need to buy new tires.

My question, what is considered the safe distance between tires and between the top of the tire and the top of the wheel well? With the Marathons, I now have 4.5" between the tires and 4" from tire to top of wheel well. Going to 16" wheels and tires I assume this distance would be reduced by about 1".

Thanks for your comments.

It depends on the axle maker. Dexter says 1 minimum. Others will say 1 minimum.
