I started renovating my 74 Argosy 28 that I picked up a month ago. The previous owner had new tires put on 100 miles ago. When I exposed the black plastic outer wheel well, there was a rub through at one of the 4 tires. The curb side rear. There is not much space between any of the tires and the inside of the wells. The owners manual shows 7.00x15.
That is also what the new tires are. But could they be wider causing the rubbing?

I would doubt its the tires, however I would check the axle....they've been known to let the wheel and brake assembly move out when they get too old and the rubber has turned hard.

But, you say the problem is on the inside....in that case, the PO has most likely installed different wheels with offset to the inside. That would be my guess.

I do believe they are to original rims. Even though they have full size hub caps, they have clips for the baby moons.

It's been a long time, and so I might be wrong, but I owned a '74 Argosy and don't remember them having baby moons.

I'd lean towards 'The wheels have an incorrect offset' if you know that you have the correct tires on the AS.

How would I know if I have the correct rims? Are there any markings on them?

They are supposed to be 0 offset, but it's hard to measure with the tire on the wheel. 0 offset means where the hub flange bolts to the wheel is exactly in the middle of the tire. Here's an illustration:

So if I have the 0 off set, could I go with a negative off set to get them centered in the wells? Better question: If they are 0 off set, why would they be that close to the inside? I mean I can not fit my finger between the tire and the inside but can fit my fist between the tire and the out side. This goes for both curb and road side.

If it's to that extreem, I would really suspect you have the wrong wheels. It might be worth it to take one off, remove the tire, and measure it.

OK, took wheel off camper. With a straight edge on the edge of the rim
Back of the lug holes to the outside is 3-1/4".
Back of the lug holes to the inside is 4".
So I guess this would be a 3/4" negative off set?

Going with a 0 off set and getting rid of this 3/4" would help.

Does the tire need to be centered, or more room on the outside for changing a flat?

Based on your measurements, your wheel is very wide. My 15" wheels are 6" wide and yours appear to be 7 1/4".

Offset is measured from the center line of the wheel. Since there is a 3/4" difference on yours, it would be a 3/8" offset and I believe yours are a positive offset.

IMHO, it also sounds like the wrong wheels to me. Wrong offset and too wide.

I was thinking that also, but the measurement of width of a wheel is taken from the inside of the wheel, where the two tire beads go. Since Tiger measured his wheels from the outside, the wheels are narrower than he measured, but hard to say how wide. That is why I suggested he dismount one tire to get a true measurement. Anyway, it does appear the wheels are offset to the inside.

The users manual says 7.00-15 tires, which is what is on these rims.

Going back to my original post, the tire is rubbing on the wheel well.

When the PO got new tires, where the rims replaced also for some reason?

Very possible the wheels were replaced, and if they have offset to the inside, that's most likely your problem. If the wheels are too wide, it might be part of the problem, and if they are too wide and offset to the inside, would make the problem worse.

You really need to inspect and properly measure those wheels, and the only way that I know of to be sure is to remove the tire from the wheel.

I agree with SteveH. To be sure everything is the way it is supposed to be. Take the tire off the wheel and make the measurements. I suspect it is a combination of the two. And no - the tire is 15 inch. It will expand to fit on the wider wheel as long as it is not too much wider.
