I get all my tires from Costco and they fill the tires with N, as part of their service. They'll also fill up my air tank and top off my vehicle tires. Since N is inert it is not effected by altitude ( used in aircraft tires).

Yeah, agreed, but too much money yet to spend on house prep items first (build shutters, etc). If no hurry-cane in '09 then maybe I can spring for it. A nitrogen fill is on the list -- cheap by comparison.

A simple and inexpensive line dryer will solve 99% of any water that may delivered. As air is mostly nitrogen, getting 100% nitrogen is just a revenue generator for those who supply this "service".
Of course I have a small portable 12v compressor in the truck with me on all trips which does not have a line dryer, but in the event I need it, I would always opt to use it or even a gas station compressor in the event of a dire need. Most times than not, I set the tire pressures at home using my main compressor with a line dryer, and off I go.
To each their own though.

With five vehicles and two trailers (both double axle) I have 35 mounted and air up tires on rims. This includes spares. At $10 a tire I would be chuncking out $350.
The air compressor with dryer works well for me saving me time and cost of gas driving over to some place to install N in my tires.
I have an added bonus in the relative humidity is usually in single digit land. Except for days like today when it did rain and the humidity is 78%.

Oxygen and moisture are the biggest factor in corosion inside the rim,install nitrogen and you get rid of both.I have 24 tires on different vehicles,and they all have Nitrogen. I keep at least 2 tanks around,because I install medical gas lines,nitrogen must be flowed thru the lines to prevent oxidation from the heat & oxygen.Some one stated nitrogen is flamable,that is far from the truth,you can put out a fire with nitrogen. Interesting, today the RF tire went rim flat on my wife's car. Pumped it up with reg dried compressed air. Found a nail in the tread. Will have to get it fixed tommorrow.
Would have used up a whole tire's worth of N if it had such. BTW humidity fell to 58% when I ran the compressor to fill the tire.

BTW one of the advantages of AZ is the low humidity. Average rain fall in the Phoenix area is less than 10 inches. A disadvantage is the lack of rain on the road. The debris does not get washed away because of the lack of rain.
So I guess I takes the good with the bad.

Hi, but if you had Nitrogen in your tire the nail wouldn't rust.

The beads are usually installed by breaking down the bead of the tire, and tossing a degradable bag containing the beads into the tire, and reinflating the tire.

Just a thought -- isn't there several cubic feet of amibient air in the tire, uncompressed, as it sits mounted but yet to be filled? So you put in your $10 of nitrogen but you still have traces of oxygen, carbon dioxide, trace gasses and moisture. It'ss not like they vacuum the tire down before filling with N.
Personally, I vote for the 78% nitrogen "au naturale" product.

Wouldn't the beads degrade the inside of the tire? I know the company says it won't, but I find that hard to believe. I guess it's the same principal as the Centramatic, but cheaper. How much do the beads cost? How do you get the tire installer to save them from the old tires?

Update - the nail ended the service life of the tire. Bought new set of French tires. Use compressed air for inflation.
Discount was the vendor. Costco was about $100 more for the same set. So I passed on the N from the Costco store.

The beads are single-use, that is, you get a new bag installed when you R&R the tire. Most bags I've seen run about $10 or so.

We ran Nitrogen in our racing karts, but only after years of tweeking every variable and understanding the result. The only reason we used it was we would adjust airpressure in each tire independent and used +-.5 PSI to adjust the handling. The tire pressure would jump 2-3 psi as the tires heated when we used air, 1-2 when we ran Nitrogen.
When I see a need to tweek my trailer tires based on road conditions, understeer, oversteer, turn-in.... I'll start totin' a tube of nitrogen....till then I'll pump up the atmosphere and stuff it into the tire...

Hi, [example] when doing a proper A/C service or repair, you vacuum the system to as close to 30" vacuum as possible before refilling with refrigerant; If you were to try doing this to tires and wheels, you would probably pull the tire off of the bead. so the tire is still, basically full of air, at zero pounds pressure. What percentage is the nitrogen at 65 lbs and how can you prove it? And if nitrogen is air with the moisture/water removed, what makes the molecules larger? Do the swell up or expand?
