Blowout on the Continental Divide

Blew out a Goodyear Marathon on Interstate 40 right at the Western Continental Divide. Saw parts of the tire flying off in the mirrors. Got safely off the Interstate. Goodyear in Gallup replaced it with a new Endurance. Will be upgrading the other tires as well. Click image for larger version

That looks like a run flat, not a blow out.
Did you hear a boom sound (blowout), or just notice the parts flying?

Thanks for sharing! You didn't mention damage to the wheel well, so hopefully you avoided it.

This appears to have been a sudden deflation caused by sidewall separation. There was no sign of a puncture through the tread. Did not hear a loud boom, but saw rubber and smoke in the mirror. Drove for a couple of miles at reduced speed to the nearest exit, so we could safely make the change. The trailer and wheel are fine. Thank goodness for that second axle.

Blowout

Do you have tire pressure / tire temp monitors? If not I recommend u get them. You would have gotten a warning before the smoke.

Thumbs up get the tire that is made in the USA

Most tires are manufactured in China with little quality control. The Goodyear Endurance is one of the few that is made in the USA( it will be stamped on the tire, made in USA) and hence has their stand behind quality. They are more expensive but at least you don't have to worry about tread separation , belt slips and odd compound mixes that cause blow outs while you are going 75 MPH. There is a reason to buy USA!

Brand name and country of manufacture aren't guarantees. Closest to that would be in avoiding ST rating altogether in favor of LT.

Replace them all.

We went through 10 tires, including 6 Marathons, during the first 100k miles.

Get the 16" Michelin LT replacements - we replaced with 16" XPS RIB - http://www.airforums.com/forums/f438...ml#post1191482 .

Don't spend time trying to figure out another replacement.

Look at the side of the tire. It gives the inflation pressure. Fill them to that pressure. Don't go by the pressure aS states. Go by the tire manufacture statement. It's low pressure side wall flexiing that ruins tires.

How long have you had the Endurance tires? This is something I'm following closely as we took delivery of our new AS in April with good ole GYMs on it. Keep tires at 65PSI (per sidewall spec), have tire pressure monitor and centramatics...
Have 3 or 4K miles on it.
I'm hoping to make these work for 2 years then replace.
Don't know yet if I'll go with Endurance or LT TIRES /wheels.

I replaced all 4 of mine with Goodyear Endurance tires this may. 10,000 miles later they still look fine. I think they got this right after the Marathon debacle.
