Question Best place in Chicago to get new AS tires for '73 Tradewind / Size question

Hi all,

First thing on my to-do list is to get new tires on the Tradewind.

Are there any Chicago folks on here who could recommend a place? My head just spins when it comes to trusting a garage I don't know. It's always comforting to go to a place that has an endorsement.

Also, just because my camper is at home and I'm looking tires up online, does anyone happen to know what size they take?

Thank you!

-Alana

There is a Airstream dealer in Joliet, Il. You are looking at about 45 minutes away. It's off interstate 80 on Old New Lenox road. You take 80 to Briggs Street, go south about 1/8 a mile and turn left. It is right on the left side of the road past the gas station. They have them parked outside. You can't miss it.

That is my old stomping grounds growing up

I recently use Suburban Tire in Hanover Park area to get new tires for an SOB. I got a good deal and they were fast and courteous.

Locations Suburban Tire Auto Care Centers Glendale Heights, IL 630-790-1600

The original tire size was a 7.00 x 15 which translates to a 215/75R/15 tire today.

Discount Tire will price match Tire Rack.com (I found out as I dragged in my tires for them to mount and balance).

They did screw up my brand new wheels, but VOLUNTARILY ordered me four new wheels at their expense. Mistakes happen....how they are handled is what makes the difference.

Discount Tires are all over the Chicagoland area.

Thank you, Chris!

I love your Avatar, by the way. I've seen it throughout the forums and it cracks me up.

You're welcome. The avitar was one of two things i could spell and use all the letters. I chose that because RAISE TRAM just didn't make any sense.
I used Yokohama LT tires on my trailer. They are actually a light truck tire, but you can ask about ST tires which are special tires for trailers.
For the SOB I chose a second line of Carlilse tires called Akuret. They were cheap at $80 each installed. I'm not too concerned about long life as this SOB won't be towed much and I won't own it too long either.

Alana,

Read my cautionary tale here:

http://www.airforums.com/forums/f457...ion-72663.html

Airstream of Chicago = very bad experience.

Like Chris, I have YOKOHAMA LT (light truck) tires on my Argosy.

I ordered Maxxis tires online & had them shipped to my local tire guy (who I always go to for my oil changes too) He put them on my rims & balanced them for me. You don't really have to go to the AS dealer to have your tires put on your trailer. You can order tires online & have them shipped to your house too. Discount Tire will mount them for you for a charge.

Brookfield is kinda far from Evanston, but we have found a decent and reliable place called Wil-Ridge Auto (Wil-Ridge of Evanston — Auto Service, Repair & Maintenance — Bike Racks, Trailer Hitches, Complete Service & Satisfaction!) that specializes in trailers. We have had them repack our bearings and would have no problem with them working on tires or wheels. Their place is a little tight to get into, but doable. They know what they are doing, and I feel much more confident about their service than the Chicago Airstream dealership.
