If it was an ST tire it probably would have been a side wall blow out. Sorry about your bad luck. Darrell

klevan ,I would say that today the trailer would have radials on it ,yes .
back then the LT bias was the best choice ,heavy duty ,had 8 real plys and
worked really well . I wouldn't necessarily say that the bias are better ,thats the first post I have seen or read about a bias tire coming apart that way .
I ran hercules Bias truck tires on my older service truck ,a 1 1/2 ton chevy stepvan for over ten years and the only problems were an inner tube getting a nail ,never a blow out or the tread coming off like that tire .they might
have been old stock ,not new or recently produced ,would like to know more
about them.
