Anyone look into the 235/75/r15 Michelins

hello all... been reading and researching as much as possible. I plan on changing over the GYM's on our new 2017 28 International... and have read where some folks are going to a 16" wheel to use the Michelins..

While looking, I came across these tires, which when compared to my 225/75/15 ST tires, are only .59 taller, and .39 wider... I'm thinking these would fit the wheel well ont he trailer just fine without the modifications I am seeing others describe when going to a 16" wheel.

Thoughts?

Tire info..

Size: 235/75R15
LRR: Michelin Total Performance
Sidewall Style: Outlined White Letters
Load Range: XL
Serv. Desc: 109T

I thought about the Michelin Defender 235/75-15 to replace my GYM's on my 25' FC. I decided to look into the new GoodYear Endeavor ST 235/75-15, but have not found any reviews yet. I want to stay with an ST tire for their stronger side wall construction, as need sharp cornering when backing into storage spot, and trailer will remain stationary for months at a time.

I have the made in USA Michelin Defender LTX M/S 235/75R15 109T Extra Load - Rated for 2271 lbs per tire (derated to 2067 lbs) at 50 PSI. With the GVWR of my trailer each tire needs to carry 1825 lbs, which leaves a margin of 242 lbs per tire.

You have a greater safety margin. Take off the tongue weight and then add back what your weight distribution hitch is adding back.

Been running the 15" Michelins in the 235-XL size for 9 years. (2 sets). No problems and we like the way the trailer rides and pulls. The tires fit in the wheel wells but there is not much room.

But, now that the Marathons are history (no longer made) and Goodyear is touting a new, improved trailer tire that is advertised by Goodyear to actually hold air and is speed rated to 87 mph I am considering trying that tire to replace the current set of Michelins. You might check the Goodyear flyer for that tire.

Ours is an older 25. Gross axle wt is 3200 lbs. each. The Michelins we run have to be derated for trailer use so come out to 1985 lbs max load per tire (It says 21something on the sidewall). Our loaded trailer wt is 5600 on the axles so we have a lot of capacity margin. I point this out because I think the newer wide body 25 is heavier. You need to check to be sure the tires are rated for more than the max axle load. Two reasons people go to 16" wheel are to get a wider selection of tires and to get more load carrying capacity.

So despite my good experience with the XL tires I am considering switching to the new trailer tires. Probably going to wait until next spring and see if any complaints come through by then.

Good to know... thanks all!

Our 2017 28 has a dry weight around 5600 so this gives us a lot of room.

I would give the endurance a chance, but honestly, we drive thousands of miles a year out to Utah and other places where help is not around the corner. The Goodyears just dont have a long enough track record for me to trust them yet.

Our previous 2008 25FB towed like a dream all across the USA on Michelins.. at 70 mph.

235 xl

We changed from the GM to the Michelin 235 XL on our 2009 25-ft FC. Could not have been happier with performance and peace of mind. We sold the unit last year and have the same tires on our new Classic.

michelin 15" defenders

I just finished a 23,000km/ 13,000 mile run across the states and down Mex1 in Baja on a new set of 15 inch Defenders. If they can take that degree of abuse they will last as long as I want them to last without any concerns. They replaced a set of Michelin LT tires that were 6 years old without a hick up! I just don't want to worry about tire failures and these tires allow me to relax!
for what its worth

Yes, I am aware there are differences in trailer tires versus XL or LT tires. I am also aware that I have seen more ST tires fail, by several orders of magnitude, than passenger tires. I was a tow truck driver in the past.. and have been int he RV world for years as well.. MH and airstreams.

I've had michelin 15 LT's on our 2008 25FB, and would run those again if they still made them.

I understand everyone is going to a 16" wheel to still run a similar (overall) sized michelin tire, but I dont really want to spend a ton of money on new wheels if they are not needed. I've read that some folks were having to cut or resize their wheel wells with this wheel tire combo as well.

I just wanted to "verify" that this tire would fit. I do see that it will be a a squeeze.. as the factory tires are in there tight already. How much movement int he suspension do these trailers see? My 2008 25FB was not this tight if memory serves

I might be willing to try the Endurance GY ST tires if they have a track record. They dont. After the GYM history (if you're didn't fail, thats awesome... but plenty of people have had failures) it makes me leery

If you are a WBCCI member, on page 30 of new BB, there is an article about this; it is in yellow. It is suggesting Michelin XPS RIB, 60K miles, E, LT215/85R 16; or LT 225/75R 16. This is a commercial and trailer tire.
Just an FYI.

Thanks.. I will that article up. I'd really like to not have to spend money on new 16 wheels if not absolutely necessary though. If I can get a 15" Michelin XL 235/75/15 in there then that would be ideal.

A few other makers have tires in the size needed.. 225/75/r15 but their weight ratings are not ideal

I'm following your reasons for staying with ST 15 tires but I haven't found any info on Goodyear Endeavor tires. Could you have meant "Endurance"?

Endurance GY's is what I had mentioned earlier, is that what you mean?

Also.. these other tires are "quality" tires, wondering if they fit the bill. What is the formula for down grading a tires weight for use on a trailer (and why?)

102T equals 1874lbs per tire... I would assume this is lower than the ST d range though

A couple of AirForums members switched to the new Nokian Rotiiva Light Truck (LT) tire in size 235/75x15, Load Range E, which appears to be a possible alternative to switching to 16 inch wheels and LT tires. However, being so new, there is very little information on long term reliability:

Nokian Rotiiva AT ATV Radial Tire - 235/75R15 116/113S 10 Ply LR-E (80 psi) - Amazon.com

Note: This tire is also available at Walmart online.

Perhaps, those members could give us an update...

The new Goodyear Endurance tires have been discussed on a number of recent threads including this one:

http://www.airforums.com/forums/f438...sa-157249.html

Search results for other threads:

https://www.google.com/search?q=good...=airforums.com

The new search function at the top in the blue box works great, by the way!

Good luck,

Peter

PS -- We are also considering the Nokian AT 15" which has also been discussed on many threads.
