Any experience w/Towmaster Tires.

Not sure I even want to "go there" but does anyone want to impart opinions or experiences about Towmaster tires. We are in need of trailer tires for a 65 24' Tradewind dual axel. These are being recommenced.

Tow Master

Have a set of four tow master 15" E rated tires on our Airstream. They have outlasted three previous sets of GYMs. Purchased them at Tire Kingdom but have also seen them at Les Schwab stores on the left coast. We are on the road a lot and the tires do not sit. I believe tires that do not sit last a lot longer.

I had a set of Towmaster tires a few years ago that were good, but a friend of mine bought a set of six for his 34' a little over a year ago, and has had three of them separate already.

Bought 6 for our 34' Excella. Close to 6000 miles no problem yet. Keep air pressures at max on tire tho.

I purchased a set of towmasters this year and have about 2500 miles on them with no problems so far. No signs of unusual wear. I keep them at 60psi and had them balanced.

I have had a pair of 15" E Rated tires on my 19 Bambi for 3 years with no issues. Our longest trip has been 150 miles. I maintain ~ 65lbs pressure.

We had two tires replaced with E-load Tow masters this last October at a commercial tire shop. The service manager recommended them as he sells them to allot of of variety of businesses where their trailers carry a heavy load. I will replace the other two this April as we almost had a blow out and one needed replacing for sure so we did the both.
One point he did mention was that due the decent price of these and trailers sitting in RV parks, that even if you had to replace these every three-four years just to be safe you'd still be ahead of the game if you went with a very expensive tire that still has the same tire life as all tires.
Again, if you are going to do allot of driving and towing it is all personal preference, but I think they are decent for the price and load they can carry.
We'll let you know if we have any issues as we've only towed 500 miles with them. Five years from now when we do a cross country trip when the tires have seen very high heat and sun and winter climates, we'll only have about $500 into the set of four rather than $1000-$1200, so going for the newer tire at that time will not be a question. If we had invested $1000-$1200, I'd probably risk the road worthiness of older tires even though they would be five years regardless of exposure. So for towing in our climates and weight of the double axle I think they are appropriate for our use.

Plus, I'd rather redirect some of my dollars to other upgrades like a new 3-burner Caribbean stove/oven while the Airstream catches rays in the sun over the next few years.

Happy Thanksgiving to all!

We were preparing for a 6K mile RT from Portland, OR to Alaska last year and at the last minute had to replace all four Marathons due to being out of round. Went on AirForums for advice and found the usual polarization of opinions regarding TowMasters, 10 ply, and pressures. I called Jackson Center for advice and found they sell the 10 ply TowMasters as an option. They did suggest to run the pressures a little lower than maximum due to the stiffer 10 ply casings. I run them at 65 psi.
I probably have close to 18K miles with no problems. That includes two 6K and several 1K trips.

All ST tires are virtually the same--not rated for over 100 degrees. I got a little better service with Maxxis e's but the tread on these also separated in the third year.
You will have tire trouble if you get on the freeway and drive a lot of miles at highway speed in the Arizona summer. On July trip from Tucson to Ft Lauderdale, I had four ST tires of various brands blow, one purchased 200 miles up the road. On summer trips from Mexico to Colorado, I had at least one blowout. Now I run Michelin LT tires rated for the load of my Airstream and have had no tire trouble for 4 years.
Before you plunk down your hard earned money for ST tires read the other posts of hot weather travelers.

Thanks for Input on Tires

Lots of good input and points to consider. We did purchase the tires and will run on these for the first couple of years. It was a "we need them now" decision as we have only been doing short surface road trip for the last year plus. We will likely upgrade to 16's and possibly do the Light Truck or All Terrain when we do that upgrade in a few years. We need to do some more research and see how we will be using Henrietta.

Regards

Wink

Love the blanket statements..."all ST tires are junk", "never use bias ply".

My blanket only covers our AS & boat trailer, both with the dreaded brand ST's.
I know nutt'n, I'm new here.

FYI: Discount Tires has stopped all sales of Towmaster tires because of the incidence of blowouts.

Seems to me if they stopped all sales of Towmaster tires because of the incidence of blowouts, they should stop the sales of ALL ST tires, because we know they all have the high incidence of blowouts.

Before we completed the purchase of the Towmaster tires we started this thread and called around for some advise. One of the places we spoke to was Discount Tire as it our usual tire store.

At that time Discount told us they would no longer be selling Towmaster tires. We asked why and Discount told us that they did not agree with how Towmaster was supporting the warranty on their tires.

For those of you familiar with Discount Tire they are very well know for supporting customers who have problems with tires purchased from them. (This is OHO based on our experience) Discount said they would make it right for the customer and then not be supported on their end by Towmaster.

That does not address your question about blowouts but just some input.
