4 new tires or 8?

I was just told that I need all 8 tires replaced at $200 each. The mechanic said that I might be ok with just the 4 single axles done and leave the old tires on the doubles for now to contain costs. Any thoughts?

Karen

OK, I'll bite. What kind of an Airstream do you have that requires 8 tires?

I agree, a 345 has 8 and they must cost a few bucks to replace.

As far as how many to replace, that's up to you. Are you replacing them because they are worn, cracked or just old. Replacing half now and half later would be easier on the wallet.

BTW, I never met a tire salesman who didn't say I need new tires...

It is a 345 motor home. It has 8 tires. They are from 2002 and I just bought the 345 in mid-June.

Karen,

Welcome to the forums. Why are the tires being replaced?
Tread worn done evenly?
Tread orn down unevenly?
Cracks in side wall or tread?
Age?

Your profile shows you are in Scottsdale, need a 2nd opinion?

Well.......that's the price of safety and security! Tires are not the place to be cheap or timid.

Nice looking rig, Karen. It looks like the clear coat is peeling at the roof line (typical) but other than that looks to be in good shape. If it were me and I could swing it, and the tires were definitely in bad shape I would replace all 8. If my budget was was tight and the tires were not too awful, I would consider replacing 4 at a time. Where to draw the line is your call. They are 7 years old depending on how long they sat around before being installed, which is old for a tire. You may consider taking Action up on his offer for a second opinion.

Being replaced due to age and the fact that I want to be safe driving it. I just wondered if $200 a piece was too much and I could take it elsewhere four the final 4?

Well that's a horse of a different color! My mind did not go to an MH. Boy that one is very nice!! You could check tire prices on line to get a comparison and make sure you are not getting hosed. Those are very large and it's not out of the question they could be $200 per. Heck I paid $150 per for tires on my pick up!

Good luck, and I would take up the offer of a second opinion, too.

7 to 8 year old tires would be in the marginal range. So replacement would not be out of line. I do not know what size tires you have since I have never owned a MoHo. My neighbor has a brand X and he was mumbling something about price being about that when he replaced his recently.

I use Discount tire for most of my fleet. There is Costco, Sams, Big O and the rest. Who are you using?

I would strongly recommend tire covers. I have tire covers on both of my trailers and on a couple of my drivers that I don't use on a daily basis. These covers will buy you a couple of extra years in service. Also keep the inflation up on a regular basis.

What size are those tires? $200 sounds pretty reasonable nowadays for a large tire.

I called the mechanic just now and told him to do all 8. He will replace the cracked spare with one of the used 8 and put aside 2 more of the old ones in the best condition for me to store as spares in my storage unit.

The mechanic is Dana Tires in Chandler. They have been in business for over 50 years. Father and son team.
