1967 Overlander Spare
Was the spare tire carried on the front or back of the 1967 Overlander?

Spares were an option on multi axle trailers. In case of a flat you could remove that tire and limp (slowly) into the next town for service. Airstream has never put spares on the rear as far as I know. The design of the shell and frame make it a bad idea.
The spare carries I have seen are under the front section of the trailer in a carrier attached to the frame. My spare rides in the back bed of my truck.

Thanks, I ask because the AS I am looking at to buy has a funny fold up bracket on the back bumper. It might be a bike rack or small motorcycle rack? Any Idea?

Any rack on the back that was used to carry something, IS bad news.
That usually causes rear end separation, very quickly, that can be rather expensive to repair.

To nswer your original question, you could put a spare between the front of the body and the LP tanks, and Airstream makes a bracket that will hold a spare wheel and tire, which mounts under the front of the trailer.

How does one mount the spare between the front of the body and the propane tanks? Ours was originally carried on the rear bumper, and that's bad. We're definitely moving it from there, but need a new location. In the truck is the interim solution, but would like to have it mounted on the trailer. I've seen pictures of Airstreams with the spare behind the propane tanks, but there wasn't enough detail to see just how it was secured in place.

My 26-foot 1967 Overlander has a flat bar that is attached with rivets to the front of the Airstream behind the LP tanks. The bar has a threaded hole, in which a long bolt with a flat plate are used to hold the spare in place.

Any chance you could post a picture of that spare tire mount? Sounds like what we need, but need info to find or build one.
Thanks.

Thanks. Shouldn't be too hard to make something like that.

I am also interested in mounting my spare at the front of my AS. I saw somewhere on this site, an AS with the tire mounted below the propane tanks and frame, with a long bolt type of mounting. Anybody remember this, and where the pictures are posted??
Thanks for any help,
After this posting, I found what I am looking for. I put the pics in a word file. I don't know how to post the site here, if anyone knows how, let me know so I can point it to you. Thanks,

I would think that a fixture supporting the tire on the A frame would be better than the tire weight on the body. Anyone seen something like that?

Amen, Andy. My previous owner had bike racks on the rear bumper. Not good. As for our spare, I'll probably go with the bed of the truck solution in the short term.
