180,000 miles on my goodyear marathons!

hello tire users...

lots of threads here on tires and especially the goodyear marathons...

some positive reports, many threads on load ratings or air pressure settings,

and of course reports of tread separation or other failures...

recently i decided mine were ready for replacement after going just over 180,000 miles....honest!

i'll post photos of them and the replacements; this info may be of use to others...

please comment or include your mileage reports and replacement experiences...

or just follow along as my tire report rolls out...

cheers

So is that 180,000 divided by 6? That would be 30,000 per tire.

reaching the mile-stone decision...

on the most recent swing to the northwest, west coast, southwest and make to oz...

i kept an eye on my marathons as always....

the airstream was approaching 30k miles and would exceed this mark before i docked at home...

as many do i visually check the tires several times a day while on the road...

also checking air pressures and tire/wheel temps...

the following pics are the curb side tires at 30k...

pretty even ware, lots of tread left and no real issues...

they were rotated at 10k and 20k...

last pic is #1 on the curb side and shows the most wear, but evenly.

the 'wear bar' can just be seen in the upper part of the photo (click it for a larger view)

cheers

It is a rare person indeed that has to worry about wearing out his trailer tires before they expire from old age. Do you think you will be replacing due to wear, or age?

now comes the street side tires again from back to front positions....

on this side the rear most tire seems most worn, but still they are pretty evenly worn on all three...

or so it seems...

We have put 10,000 miles on our new Airstream since june of this year. We look forward to wearing out the tires long before they become too old.

that last tire streetside need a closer look...

here it is...

the wear bars are just above midline in the photo...

and while the over all wear appears even,

it is obvious the tire is worn more on the inboard side; right into the wear bar.

so it's time for a new one right?

click the photo is ya need a closer view of the wear bar...

Joe, it looks like you have just over 3/32" of tread in that spot. If the tire was on a car I would recommend replacing it before the next oil change (3000 miles), and getting the alignment checked on it. The three axle units are notoriously hard on tires, though, and it looks like you have very good wear for the trailer.
Also, if you want to get another gadget, a tread depth gauge is about $5-7, and you can tell in a second how many 32nd of tread you have remaining. Any that have less than 4/32" of tread, I would seriously consider replacing.

thanks terry, i've got a gauge...

and i agree before the next oil change...

it is true most folks replace tires based on time, side wall cracking or sadly...

after the fact failures...

these tires are 3 years old almost by date...

and have given me great support...

almost all of it at 72mph...

and 65psi...

across the rockies 5 times and east to jackson center twice...

2 hot summers, lots of rallies, gravel roads and an occasional curb...

for me the decision was easy...

replace 'em all.

so i did..

cheer

Looks like we were posting at almost the same time, and probably the same conclusions. It is always better "2air" on the side of caution and safety.

i decided to alter my home route slightly so i could swing south into the dallas/ft worth area...

to weatherford texas and roger williams airstream...

called david tidmore and they'd have the tires when i arrived...

the service department was prepared and great....

dallas got me jacked up and off came the wheels...

rolled over to the tire shop in the dealership...

old ones off and new marathons on...

wheels balanced...

i decided to take a closer look at the expended tires....

especially that most worn one....

here is a photo of it stacked against another tire from the same group...

how about a little closer view....

see anything?

cheers

do I see

2Air,

Do you have a broken belt on the tire on the left?

It sure looks like one I replaced a couple of years ago.
