16" Wheels and Tires

I apologize if this has already been discussed. I want to upgrade my 2015 27FB Serenity to 16" wheels and Tires. Is there any modification necessary on this trailer in order to accommodate the larger tires?

None.If you add a 16 spare you will need to slightly bend the finger on the carrier.Takes about 2 mins and a large cresent wrench

There is no additional modification needed. In my opinion, this is about the best upgrade you can do. I have done it to two different Airstreams now.

On my 2015 Flying Cloud I sold the OEM tires and wheels and got back over one third of the upgrade cost.

I bought the Sendel T03 wheels and the Michelin LTX M/S 2 tires in LT225/75R16E size.

I found the best price on-line at Performance Plus Tires in Long Beach, California. The shipped me the tires mounted and balanced. We installed them on the Airstream ourselves using Lego blocks to get one wheel up at a time.

We also added Centramatic Balancers.

I had this same combo on my 2005 Safari. When I sold it there were 60,000 miles on the Michelins with no visible tread wear.

Here are some photos of what the new tires and wheels look like.

16" wheels and tires

I've been trying to find SenDel wheels and am being told they are on back order for at least 60 days. Anyone have an idea of another wheel that will work and look as nice?

Thanks Brian! How did you handle spare? By bending the pins on the carrier as Moflash suggested?

Hi Pat,

You can find all kinds of wheels that will do as well.

I initially looked for the Sendels locally, but could not find them and didn't want to pay shipping from the US.

All I did was to get the specs of the Sendels that I knew would fit ..... diam x width, bore size, bolt pattern, offset, and weight capacity.

I went to a local tire shop who had the Michelins tires at a good price, and they found me some aluminum wheels that matched the specs.

They came back with several options, and I bought rims whose appearance I actually preferred to the Sendels for about $80 each. They are good for 3200 lbs. each.

So far I have used them on a trip to Arizona, another to Florida, an several shorter trips, and they are fine.

Very happy with tires and wheels.

I believe I do have a pic, but I never seem to have much luck trying to post pics on this forum!

If you want to PM me your email, I'm sure I can find one and send!

Having the SenDel T03 and Michelins installed tomorrow at 8:30 AM. They told me I got the last 4 wheels from the warehouse. I'll try to remember to post the pics.

At first I tried bending the pins out with the rack still attached to Lucy. This didn't work too well as it is hard to get any leverage. I removed the rack in about two minutes. it is held to the frame with two bolts. Once I had it out, bending the pins was easy with a piece of pipe.

Here are a few photos.

I bought five of the wheels for $79Can. each in Oct 2013.

The only info I was given before buying was a copy of a page from a Green Ball Tire website that showed the design and specs.

The Wheel part number from the GreenBall website was GB174-66655G and the specs ....

16"x6"
0 offset
4.25" pilot
8 - 5 1/2 bolt pattern.
3200 lb.

I'm afraid the info won't be much use now though, because I think the reason I got a good price on them was that it was a discontinued style.

Brian, I am sure that bending the pins is a common practice, as I have read about others doing so numerous times. My concern is that bending the pins may weaken them or even cause them to break during the bending process. I am wondering if Airstream offers a spare tire holder that will accommodate the 16" wheel.

16" Wheels and Tires

You only bend the pin approx 1 in.It does not weaken the pin.Lol.I dropped the carrier to remove old spare and used a large Cresent wrench to pull the pin outward.Very simple but some people make a big deal out of nothing......I did not remove the tire carrier.
