Having the SenDel T03 and Michelins installed tomorrow at 8:30 AM. They told me I got the last 4 wheels from the warehouse. I'll try to remember to post the pics.

At first I tried bending the pins out with the rack still attached to Lucy. This didn't work too well as it is hard to get any leverage. I removed the rack in about two minutes. it is held to the frame with two bolts. Once I had it out, bending the pins was easy with a piece of pipe.

Here are a few photos.

I bought five of the wheels for $79Can. each in Oct 2013.

The only info I was given before buying was a copy of a page from a Green Ball Tire website that showed the design and specs.

The Wheel part number from the GreenBall website was GB174-66655G and the specs ....

16"x6"
0 offset
4.25" pilot
8 - 5 1/2 bolt pattern.
3200 lb.

I'm afraid the info won't be much use now though, because I think the reason I got a good price on them was that it was a discontinued style.

Brian, I am sure that bending the pins is a common practice, as I have read about others doing so numerous times. My concern is that bending the pins may weaken them or even cause them to break during the bending process. I am wondering if Airstream offers a spare tire holder that will accommodate the 16" wheel.

16" Wheels and Tires

You only bend the pin approx 1 in.It does not weaken the pin.Lol.I dropped the carrier to remove old spare and used a large Cresent wrench to pull the pin outward.Very simple but some people make a big deal out of nothing......I did not remove the tire carrier.

When I got the 16" tires and wheels for my 2005 Safari, I got them at the Factory Service Center in Jackson Center. At the factory they just bent the pins out a bit to accommodate the slightly larger tire. After this installation, I towed that Airstream another 60,000 miles. There was no issue with the spare tire carrier. I would check it occasionally when I checked the air pressure in the spare tire.

I have now towed the 2015 Flying Cloud over 10,000 miles with the 16" tires and wheels with no spare tire carrier issues.

You can check with the Service Center, but I suspect that Airstream uses the same spare tire rack on all 15" and 16" tires.

When I bent the pins out on my spare tire rack flat on the driveway. It appeared to bend very nicely at the elbow, and there did not appear to be any stress at the connection weld.

Keep in mind that the bend you will make is very slight as you are only trying to accommodate an addition one inch of diameter.

Can factory supply 16" wheels & tires?

I am a few weeks away from ordering a new '25 Flying Cloud as a newbie. This is my first post. I have poured over this forum while trying to understand the criticisms about the Goodyear Marathon STs. As a result, I favor 16" Michelin LT tires in an effort to avoid dangers mentioned by many contributors. Since I already know that I don't want the factory installed Goodyears, my question is this - Can a dealer order the trailer with Michelin's or will l I have to take delivery and then sell the unwanted tires and wheels myself? Also, is there an advantage to aluminum wheels over 16" steel? Thanks in advance for your help.

Welcome to the Forums.

I would get a price from your Airstream dealer to add the 16" Michelin upgrade. I got a price from the dealer. It was $4500.

I purchased my 5 16" Michelins and Sendel wheels on-line as a pre-mounted package. I put the new wheels on myself. The package cost $1600 (Oct, 2014) and I sold my OEM tires and wheels for $600. The upgrade cost was $1000.

I saved enough ($3500) over the dealer quote that it was well worth the effort and trouble.

I would also highly recommend adding Centramatic Balancers when you make the switch. This will cost around $200.

As to aluminum vs. steel wheels, I don't know enough to make any comment.

As a comment to this discussion we upgraded your tires/wheels when we first got our trailer. My local tire dealer sold me the new 16" with wheels and took to original units in trade. Cost 1,000.00 cdn difference.
We did not bother with the spare as the factory 15" will work as a spare if you ever need it. Actually a spare is not really needed at all as the AS will tow okay on three tires if needed. At least good enough to get to the next tire shop.
Hope this helps
Cheers
Doug

Performance Plus Tires seem to have the Sendel T03's in stock according to their website at $112 each.
