Troy, it's not the 16" that makes a difference it's the fact that Michelin produces a E rated LT tire that is not available in the 15".

Jumping in again here. I believe the heart of your question is why are people spending a lot of money on new tires/wheels after just spending a lot of money on a new Airstream that have new tires/wheels.
The answer is quite simple. Goodyear Marathon tires have an extremely poor track record especially in the blow out category. Many forum members might disagree but I don't. My AS is a 2016 model year & I've changed out the Marathons for Maxxis E rated tires, if for no other reason than just piece of mind. They fit a 15" wheel.

As Joe has said, those of us who wish to try LT (light truck) tires in lieu of ST (Special Trailer) tires that "Seem" to be much more failure prone (very costly if /when they blow out and rip up the side of your trailer) must move to 16" wheels in order to buy an LT tire having the needed load carrying capacity for the newer heavier trailers in the longer lengths.

It is nothing special about 16" per se - just what you need to do if you want LT tires depending on the trailer you tow!
