16" tire upgrade

I started a discussion about my tire upgrade from 15" to 16" wheels and tires and did not get the answer I was looking for. I understand that most of you upgraded to LT225/75R16 Michelin or other brands. I, however, ordered XPS 235/85R16 Michelin tires. Theses tires have a diameter of 32" considerably more than the 225/75R16 size. Consequently, I have about 1" of clearance from the wheel well on the front of the front tire. My question is- is this clearance too dangerous and should I replace these tires with the XPS 225/75R16 tires? Perhaps an expensive mistake. Any thoughts would be appreciated even if embarrassing.

Personally, I would have tire dealer exchange the 235/85x16 tire for 225/75x16's. You probably don't need the extra load capacity, and there is some risk of the larger tire contacting the top of the wheel well and causing a fire or blowout. Also, I suspect that the tire barely clears the wheel well trim, which could also cause problems.

Most tire dealers allow customers to exchange tires within a few days and/or miles, at no charge; although the dealer may charge for mounting and balancing the second set of new tires. If you haven't towed very far, and the tires are undamaged with no treadwear, you can probably exchange them; but I wouldn't wait too long.

The XPS is likely the most durable tire made, I have seen them run for years 20% over load capacity with no trouble at all. However they are a pretty stiff riding tire and they are heavy. For your trailer you would not have any less life with a the LTX 225/75R x 16 tire and it will be much friendlier to your Airstream. Run the LTX's at 45 PSI.

The clearance of the front of the front tire is acceptable at 1", as tire movement over uneven road surface will be more or less up and down. The clearance issue would be under a dymanic circumstance when the axle is moving up and the trailer body is moving down. Is there enough clearance between the top of the tire and the wheel well?

Thanks to everyone for their reply to my situation. There is about 4-5 inches of clearance at the top of the wheel well. I contacted Airstream and the technical department felt that the 1" clearance is acceptable at the front of the wheel well. But I am considering replacing with 225/75R16's for peace of mind.
