Well, according to some here, ST tires are a no no.

I'm sorry, but I am going to side with the manufacturers on this.

If they say an LT tire is not to be used on a trailer, I am not using one. No matter how much "internet wisdom" is behind that practice.

I'm going to stick to ST tires. They are made specifically for trailers. And I give more credence to the manufacturer's statement on what they design and build rather than some anecdotal experiences posted on an internet forum.

But that's me. Call me crazy. YMMV.

OK.
I felt that way once upon a time.
I took that stance once upon a time.

I just posted a 16 "tire question in another thread and am also keeping up with this one.

One of the reasons we are leaning toward NON trailer tires was the speed rating for most trailer tires being quite low. Is that no longer a consideration.

I did read the Carlisle brochure.

...and the fact that trailer tires are not long life or long tread life tires...
I used to wonder what all the hype was about until I had 2 different sets of ST tires come apart at less than 3 years old.
LT tires on my Airstream-
P-rated tires on my utility trailer-
In fact, I have always had P-rated tires on my utility trailer. It has never had ST tires. I changed them last summer because the DOT dates on the old tires was like 1995 or so. ST tires won't last that long.

In case it helps, I'll just drop another reminder that Airstream equips at least two trailers with 16" wheels and LT tires: the Pendleton and the Eddie Bauer.

...and the new Classics...
...and the 16" Sendel T03 wheels and Michelin 16" LT tires are optional on many more trailers and sold and installed at the factory service center in Jackson Center, OH and through Airstream dealers...

Trust in a corporation's judgment, usually motivated by the desire for maximum profits, is misplaced IMO.

Why give away that power to use our own judgment and good sense?

Ditto to other posters' comments about Airstream using LT tires (increasingly by the way).

I think I would trust that document/advertisement more if it was from the tire industry versus the manufacturer.

No issue with Carlisle just the promotional aspect of it.

Oliver Trailers: Standard Michelin LT 16 Inch Tires

I was wanting information on Oliver Trailers being made currently and received some information that you may find interesting.

"Oliver has a unique patented design and construction process. We begin with Dual, High Quality Fiberglass Shells or Hulls. In addition, we utilize Dual-Axles, a hefty 2" x 5", Box Tube Aluminum Frame (aircraft grade aluminum) and 4- 16"LT Michelin Truck Tires. "

They have an 18.5 foot and a 23.5 foot model. Both must be double axle with FOUR Michelin 16" LT tires. Most likely LTX M/S2's.

These are STANDARD on their two models available.

Ray we gave seen several of them and they are high quality trailers. They have an active (open) Facebook and you can see when they might be in an area near you for a personal viewing.

We would *love* to want an Oliver. Need a better floor plan, and maybe a 28' model, before we can take the plunge.

We passed on Oliver also, due to the price at the time but still think highly of them. Good luck Ray.

And a good heads up that Oliver is using Michelin 16" LT tires, in terms of this thread's primary topic.

Thanks

The Oliver is 12" narrower on the inside than our 23D but has a 1000 pound higher GVW and lots more factory installable accessories than Airstream ever thought about!

For 2017, Airstream did move away from 14" tires and wheels on the 2017 23D as the rubber is virtually impossible to find except for ST tires.

We upgraded to five lug 15" SenDel T03-56545T wheels and 15" Michelin LTX (P) 235/75R15 XL tires (more than adequate load capacity for the 3,000 pound rated axles), auto-adjust brakes and made in the USA Timken complete wheel bearing sets and seals.
