We run our 16" Michelins at 72/73 psi on the Classic as I know the weight each wheel is carrying. The 23D has one tire load at 1360 pounds, so the CanAM recommendation of 44 psi works for the 15" Michelins as the maximum load capacity is at 41 psi and max pressure is at 50 psi.

$1,200 is actually a good price.

Not really if you consider the inherent value of the existing ST tires and wheels that Airstream includes in the base price of the trailer. In addition you can usually find rebates on the tires and since Airstream doesn't qualify as a tire dealer, the LT tire option from them doesn't qualify for rebates. For all intents you are paying for the original wheels and tires and then paying again for the upgraded wheels and tires.

Consider Discounttiredirect.com is selling their Michelin LTX M/S 2 16" tires for $187.91. Free delivery and no sales tax. Also you get a $100 Visa Cash Card when you buy 4 tires. Net cost $651.64 or $162.91 each. So if you buy the tires and wheels outside of Airstream and sell the existing new tires and wheels that come with the trailer which will further drive down the cost. You can see that the Airstream upgrade cost is quite profitable for them and costly for you.

Yes, but one has to also consider the cost of one's time and convenience. I'd pay $1200 to turn my keys over and get my trailer with new shoes. We each have different priorities.

Wheels cost me right at $400.
Tires cost me right at $600.
I could have left it at that and been right at $1,000 all in, but...
I wanted Centramatic balancers- $200, and...
Dill TPMS- $200, so...
I was $1,400 all in.
I sold my original wheels for $200, so I ended up at $1,200 all in.
They should credit you the full value of the 15" wheels and tires.
I still say $1,200 as an upgrade is a good price.
I was quoted like $625 each plus shipping!
No way!
$2,500 + shipping!
I guess if you don't count the Centramatic balancers and Dill TPMS I am at $800 doing it myself.

They should but I'm not aware that they do. Can anyone who has done this verify if you get a credit for the original wheels and tires if you upgrade at build time? Or does the tire and wheel change occur after completion of the trailer and you go home with 4 extra tires and wheels?

Another convert

Bought our "05 Classic new in"06 and including the originals, have had total of 15 GYM's on. After our first trip this season I discovered our 4th and 5th tire separating, the front tire on each side. The first 3 over the years were easy to recognize visually. Two found while on the road, one at home prepping for the season. The two presently on the trailer were found after returning home from our first 1K trip of this season. My scissor chocks would not fit between the tires as they normally do on one side and would not fit at all between the other side tires. After raising the trailer and close inspection found the separation. Overall, we have had 5 out of 15 GYM's involve tire separation; not good odds. We are heading west for the summer, needed new tires anyhow so ordered 5 wheels/tires from Performance and waiting for delivery. I have had several sets of Michelins on the F250 so have a lot of trust in them. It will be nice and a new feeling, having trust in the tires.

Here is his web site. http://www.barrystiretech.com/pmetricvsltmetric.html

Here's the DOT reg that deals with derating and note it only talks about P tire derating. Check out section E.

I was born without the ability to say, "I am wrong".

The best I can do is, "It appears that you are right."

Here is a fairly plain language link to support what you are saying.

I also felt that there should be been more credit for not receiving the 15" wheels - per dealer rep I would not receive the original wheels

Also consider that by ordering thru the factory the wheels and tires are now an Airstream installed product, two year (non wear) warranty. Plus the Sendel warranty. Michelin does not warranty the LT tire as used on a trailer, I had and continue to have numerous email correspondence and four phone calls with their engineering department and marketing department on the subject and they are firm. I just like to rattle cages sometimes.

We put them on two previous AS, ordered these from the factory and either the dealer or AS gave us some credit for the 15" that were not installed. I negotiated with the dealer on this topic.

At the factory, the trailer comes down the line on the 15" GYM and wheels except for the 2015 and later Classic and the Eddie Bauer/Pendleton models. The upgrade to 16" Michelins and SenDel wheels occurs is the other profit center called the Service Center. The takeoffs go back and are put on another trailer coming down the line.

I took my 2014 Classic's takeoffs to my son to put the wheels on his SOB. I already had a tire issue in the GYMs just from the trip from the factory to the dealer and then to the storage unit. The 23D takeoffs were left at the dealer as there is not much market for 14" tires and wheels and the 23 models get 15" tires and wheels for 2017. We find the 10" brakes are more than adequate for out 23D and we just upgraded them to auto-adjust brakes.

16" Sendel Wheels & 16" Michelin LTX Tires

So if you upgrade at build time does Airstream give you an upgrade price that is lower than what the service center would charge if you just brought your trailer up to JC?
