Who is still running on Original Axles?
Yeah I know all older Airstreams need newer axles. But who out there is running on the old ones, due to budget or "just haven't got around to it", etc.
YOu don;t have to fess up uyou can use the poll.

Well I replaced the torsion axle in the 67 but the leaf spring axle in the 60 is still fine. So, yes and no.

New axles on both the 1966 Overlander and 1966 Safari within the last couple of years. I had "Shackman" aka Doug Rowbottom help with everything. If you need them, he the man to talk too.

My '69 ambassador is on the original axles. They are still working well. I have thought about new ones but dont want to spend the money since I tested them and they seem to be fine.

The 1960 Ovelander I have is sitting on leaf spring axels. I would think they should be fine.

Running the originals on my 1978 Ambassador. I'll change them when I get the cash but with two kids in college it will be a few years.

All mine are still on original axles. Most of our traveling is with the 61. That was the first year for the torsion axles. I get 5 to 10 k miles between mantle changes on the gas light and no signs of anything being beaten up

Still have the original axles on both of my trailers...but considering they are parked I doubt it makes much difference at the moment.
When I get done with the 1975 it will get new axles. The 1980 won't, for a variety of reasons it will probably never see the roads again.

My 69 Overlander has the original torsion axles. My trailer got much shorter on the tow from GA to Peru, NY. Next time I see it, it will have new axles.

As far as I know, our '63 is still running around on the original axles, with no problems. The '74 has new axles, though since replacing them it's developed an appetite for tires.

All of mine are , but my one 67 is doing the thing when it's starts to crack on the ceiling in the kitchen area above the bi fold doors. I read where Andy said that means it needs new axles.

I believe my axles are original and I am going to replace them before I travel any more based on what I have learned from this forum. It is an easy decision since my TW is a keeper and I am planning on doing a lot of traveling. I am also planning on installing new disc brakes when I install the new axles. Reliability may not be as good (my 45 year old drum brakes seem to work fine), but I am hoping that the improvement in the stopping distance will be worth it. Just one shorter stop that avoids a collision will be worth the extra cost (both money and reliability).
It looks to me like the material cost for new axles with disc brakes versus drum brakes is about $800- not cheap but worth it to me. I also like disc brakes. All my cars have had them for many years and changing pads is much easier and simpler than changing brake shoes.

As far as I know its illeagle to ride in a towed trailer. Now IF I had done that in this '64 safari soon after I'd bought it I'd have seen the whole kitchen cabnet jumping up and down on bumps. That would have explained the 1/2" holes where the 1/8" screws almost held the sink cabnet to the int wall! Likewise for the attachment points for the side goucho! I'd have seen that super expensive suicide door with the loose rivits jumping around like popcorn. And the noise of sheet metal rattleing would have been unbearable. I'd have been amazed that the glass in the jaloise windows was intact! Afterwards, after checking for all my teeth, if I checked the axle I'd have found 2 1/2"s of travel. IF I took the same ride again after I'd changed out the torsion X and corrected 1 wheel out of balance by 1 3/4 oz I'd have been stuned to see all those problems gone! But I'd only have seen these things IF I'd broken the law, and I certianly would'nt recomend that to anyone.
