Upside down trailer and axle pieces

Ok, so the title is slightly misleading....

I'm going to use one of my old axles under a farm trailer and had to narrow it 5.5 inches for the best fit soo...

I flipped over the farm trailer...

And sawed a section out of the center beam...

And thought the interior of the axle might be interesting to some of ya'll

none of the rubber rods are completely wiped out but it does appear that they have squirmed into an unusual position.

The rods are where they are supposed to be. We have a display here, and the rods in it are where they are in yours.

Terry, please explain. From what I can see, it appears that the rod at 12:00 is nice and round, the ones at 3,6 and 9:00 seem to be smashed by half.

That was kinda my observation. 3 were malformed and squished into a strange shape and 1 seemed to be round. It makes me wonder if the failure mode was the rods got rolled into a pinched shape and simply couldn't unwind.

I was surprised at how rubbery they still seemed.

Are those Henschen or Dexter?

Did they come off your Airstream?

And last but not least. What year are they from?

1977 axles, Henschen, original axles on my 'stream

Inlight of that crushing.. 2 are in good shape.

I would surrmise its because they were not load bearing at the time of the photo. Otherwise it would seem a bit weird because I would think the 2 good ones would be carrying the brunt of the weight.

I was on the way out the door when I posted the above. They are where they are supposed to be, even though "squished".

The rubber rods appear deformed, but I think they are not, since it was a matter of the angle of the photo, as evidenced by the shadow to the right of the shaft, which suggests that the camera was not straight on.

If the steel shaft cannot be removed easily from the square tube, then the axle, while being shot for it's original intended use, still can be used for far lesser weight loads.

We have numerous requests for old axle sales from people that want to make a small utility trailer.

A 3000 pound or more old axle, that still has a little life in the rubber rods, works sort of OK, for small light weight utility trailers.

We usually give them away.

Out of the 1/2 dozen trys to wiggle the lens and flash into a good angle for the photo, that one gave the best representation of what the rubber inserts actually looked like.

The 12 o' clock rod is basically round, 3 and 9 are semi squished/twisted and the 6 o'clock one is almost the shape of a shrimp and bound in position.

It was explained to me in a PM-
"the axle design in your pic was tried for a few years as an "improvement" to the older design. when it proved to be NO better and perhaps LESS good, they went back to the older design, which is a square rod inside, NOT the toothed/hooked version like the one in your picture"
