Tires closer together on one side

Hello,

I parked our 2018 27FB the other day and tried to put in our FastWay chick system (the one that goes in between the wheels to prevent movement both ways). I noticed that the tires on one side are quite a bit closer together than the tires on the other side.

We’re parked on a gravel driveway right now. Haven’t noticed anything strange in towing.

Is there any cause for concern?

Thank you.

Bill

We noticed the same condition on our 2016 Classic, maybe 1/4" to 3/8" difference, enough to notice with the between wheel chocks. Had the factory service center check the alignment during the warranty period and said all was good. 20,000+ towing miles and no funny tire wear issues, so seems ours is good.

Hi

Ummm..... errrr ..... Tires should be the same spacing on both sides of the trailer. Maybe not to 1/4" (which you can notice swapping chocks), but a couple of inches is not how it should be.

So - just how far are we talking about?

At least as important - is it getting worse?

Bill,

I think there could be two things that will effect tire spacing; the tires themselves and the axle spacing.

You might want to first measure the distances between the wheel centers which is the axle spacing and should be the same on both sides. (I replaced the axles on my rig a few years back and the difference was about 1/16 of an inch, probably within my ability to measure.) I don't know what the factory tolerance on axle alignment is but I'd do some checking if the difference approached 1/4 inch.

I am assuming your tires are identical and properly inflated. Tires are not perfectly round, close but there usually is some run out. Normal tire variation is usually no big deal but I have had defective tires where it was noticeable; causing vibration and just by feeling the outside of the tire. You could check this by pulling one tire up on a wedge block and spinning the other tire. If all the tires are more or less round with no bulges you should be good to go.

Good luck.

Ok...dum question.🤪
Is the profile of both chocks the same, TP the same? Swap 'em.

First thing you need to do is measure the spacing between the axle mounts where they bolt to the frame. Both sides should measure the same.

Make sure the axles and tires are not under stress from turning into a tight space. ie backing in etc.

.... un-even paving .... un-level site .... tire pressure not the same ... tire temperature not the same (hot hub) ...

The AS torsion suspension swings through an arc. If the ground and trailer are not perfectly level, the spacing can be different as each wheel is in a different point of its suspension stroke.

There is also a possibility that when you disconnected the trailer you had the axles torqued. Before disconnecting the Jew pull forward a little and make sure that the tires were straight.

Tire belt separation? Inspect tires, raise trailer, slowly rotate tire look for runout, tread bulges. Happened to me on GYM's years ago.

Bill,

Resolved? What did it turn out to be?
