Serial or model number location

Can someone tell me where identifying number for the axle of my 1968 Safari may be located?

So far, I have located a plate with the following information:

Airstream
Dura-Torque-Axle
Axle-Rating 5000 LBS
Pat No 8-712-742
Mfg. By Henschen- Inc Corp
Jackson Center

The 8 in the pat no could be an "R"

The plate which I found is located on the curb side in the front vertical face of the axle.

If you are looking for a replacement axle, try talking to Andy at Inland RV. He's very very knowledgable about them.

Maybe he will chime in on this thread and help identify replacement model number?

Axle options

Hi Map Man,
Henschen, the company that made the axle on your Safari, closed its doors a few years ago. It is a little more complicated than giving a part number or model number to a vendor and ordering a replacement. Your options are to-
Order a new Dexter Axle from a Dexter dealer such as Southwest Wheel in SA.
Order an new Rockwell American axle from Quality Trailer in SA.
Call Colin Hyde to order a new Axis axle.
You will need to take a few measurements and decide options no matter where you buy a new axle.
A good read about axles is here.
Good luck and hope your search goes well.

I contacted SW Wheel here in San Antonio, they acted like I was from Mars, they do not handle travel trailer axles. I am traveling to Ohio and New York later this summer, and was hoping to pick up axle and save shipping costs.

"they acted like I was from Mars"

Unfortunately, that is something that you will run into from time to time when you tell them the part you are looking for is for a vintage Airstream. I have been told the same thing many times. I guess it is just too much work for them to help you. That is their loss.
Fortunately, there are many other options. You might also try TruckPro on Ackerman RD in SA. They are listed as a Dexter dealer on the Dexter website.
The Rockwell American axles are made in the DFW area, so shipping would be minimal. Quality Trailer has a location on S General McMullen DR. When you go to one of these generic trailer places, tell them you need a rubber torsion axle. When they ask what it goes on tell them "The Space Shuttle". A torsion axle is a torsion axle no matter what type of trailer it goes under. Picking up the axles in Indiana would also be a good option if going that way.

What is it that you want to know?

We don't need any info other than the trailer serial number.

If you wish to buy one somewhere else, as TOP said, you need all the dimensions, etc., and hope you didn't make a mistake.

TOP also directed you to several other sources, but they will all have to have the "exact" specs of what you want.

Andy
