For a number of factors, it's time to replace the original leaf spring Hadco axles on our 1968
28' Silver Streak Rocket. We won't be doing a torsion axle conversion, but we will be replacing the 2.5" drop axles with a straight axles for a little extra clearance. The axles measured 78" hub face to hub face, 59 3/8" spring center to spring center.
The trailer's gross weight is 8,000 lbs, which means I can't just throw on a pair of cheaper 3,500 lbs Dexter axles without compromising that. 4,000 and 4,400 lbs axles used to be offered through Al-Ko, but even before the take over, I couldn't find those online. So I may be stuck using a couple of pricier 5,000 lbs axles.
I'm in San Diego and the trailer is in San Luis Obispo county, so I'm going to try to find a shop nearby one of those locations who can build us some loaded axles that will fit. I plan to install them myself with new hardware and cleaned up leafs. Please chime in if you have some experience as it's all new to me.
