Replacement Axle source?

I imagine there are instances where a cutting torch would be the preferred method, but man, impact wrenches have gotten impressive over the past years. I just bought a 3/8" unit that will develops 370 foot pounds of breakaway torque.

1/2" units are now able to develop in excess of 1,000 ft lbs.

Changing axles isn't hard, i think you may be pleasantly surprised at how easy it is.

Pam, how are your new axles? How was e installation? How was the price? We are getting ready to do axles on Our own 1968 Tradewind, just like yours, and would appreciate the information. We have done 80's excella axles in the past.

I ordered my axles From Colin told him yr. and size, simple bolt up no mods. or welding or drilling, slipped rite in except forgot to put shocks on 1st axle before mounting, had to drop install shocks took about 20 min. no mistake second axle. I did mine when I was over 77 yrs. old, now 80 would not be afraid to do it again, but it helps to have many tools & lots of mech. savvy

There may be a difference in post 1969 units to pre-1969 units.

Typically the drilling or modifications may be needed on earlier units.

Very few units are simple "bolt up" no matter who you order them from. There are a few years who get lucky and set the expectation that they all should. I change a number of axles per month, across a wide range of years, rarely do the I get lucky and just unbolt and re bolt.

The axle mounting bracket was changed so that the trailer would be one inch higher with the new style, starting with the 1969 models.

Retro fitting then on a 1968 and older, requires new mounting holes.

Not a biggie.

I thought about this a little bit.

My guess is that when the trailers were built they put the axles in the frame slots and drilled the frame to fit the axles.

The axle mounting plates that are welded on to the side of the frame, already have the axle bolt holes in place.

No drilling is necessary.

I ordered mine from Colin,after a SNAFU with "another" retailer in Ca. and they were a direct bolt in replacement with no problems.'72 Excella 500 tandem

You should be very happy for yourself. In my experience, rarely is a simple bolt on. I do a pair or two replacements every month and it has been a long while since this blind squirrel found it's acorn. I need to start doing more 70's trailers I guess.
