Question: Will a 1964 Overlander axle fit 1965 Safari?

My Father bought a new set of axles from Inland (Axis made) for his 1964 Overlander. He doesn't plan on using them right away and I was going to "borrow" one of them for my 1965 Safari to get mine on the road a little quicker.

Do they use the same axle? The Axis Part Number is 10598, 3500# on the shipment paperwork.

Thanks in advance.

No, you shouldn't use one of those axles.

Your Safari uses a 5000 pound axle, not 3500 pounds.

If you use it, you will ruin it very quickly.

The fit is the same, but the ratings are far apart.

Overloading a torsion axle, as you suggest, will destroy the rubber rods.

I thought safari's came with a 3200 # axle? The trailer only weighs around 3000lb. Are you sure about 5000 lbs?

The following are Airstream and Henschens specs for the Safari, which is a 22 foot Airstream from 1961 to 1968, that uses one axle.

1961 3600 pound axle. Lots of trouble.
1962 3600 pound axle. even more trouble
1963 4000 pound axle. troubles reduced.
1964 4000 pound axle. still some trouble.
1965 5000 pound axle. Troubles stopped.
1966, 1967 and 1968 Safari's, all used 5000 pound axles.

Great info. Thanks. So what is the norm you see in customers buying a new axle? Do people stay with the 5000 lb rating or are you finding people increasing the rating on Safaris to say a 5500 lb axle? (or whatever the next higher axle lb rating is available)

Any increase beyond 5000 pounds for that older model, is not recommended by Airstream or Henschen.

Your problem is not the axle, but the frame. Putting a stiffer axle under a frame that isn't strong enough is a bad combination.
