Physical Weight of Axles

What is the physical weight of a Dexter axle without brakes and bearings? I'm about ready to unbolt mine and I don't want to break my arm!

I'm guessing over 200 pounds.

I gotta rig a lifting device so I can remove and replace axles on m own.

Unbolt one end at at time and they aren't bad.

I loosened one end and then took the bolts out of the other and handled it by myself on the way down, one end at a time.

I used a floor jack to lift and had a friend help hold the other end stable to replace them. Start the bolts on each end. When both ends are hanging, then tighten.

200#s sounds a little heavy.

If you look at the picture (#14) I sent you for the lifting safely thread, the red jack to the right of the ramp is holding the axle up. Used it to lower the old axle and to raise the new one. It was easy to balance the axle, raise it and fasten it home.......Phil.

The bill of lading for the axis axles (complete with brakes, bearings) that I just received, states 405 pounds for two axles.

Thanks for the info Airstramers. I may have to rig a axle lifting tool for my floor jack so I can lift and move them around like Phil did. The axles look a little un-gainly with the heavy lever arms and spindles on the ends. It looks like it will want to roll over when the bolts are removed. I don't think they will balance on a single floor jack.

The axles are too heavy for home delivery. I imagine they will be banded to a pallet. I'll have to find a truck dock and fork lift to receive them. It may be a challenge to get them down to my garage in my pick up.

Exciting times ahead.

The drums and brake assemblies are heavy. Maybe 30 pounds per wheel, so deduct about 60 pounds from that 202# figure. Figure on it being about 140-150 or so.

I successfully removed the axles from my Trade Wind meaning I didn't drop one on my foot. I borrowed the neighbor's floor jack, and using mine, the two floor jacks gave me the support I needed to bang them out of the notchs one side at a time. I had disassembled the brakes and bearings from the spindles before hand.

I weighted the naked axle at 110 lbs. It's clumsy to handle, but not as heavy as I thought.

I have new axles on order for delivery the first part of January.

Hi Rod,
The axles + pallet weighed 405 lbs, however each complete axle assembly is around 175 lbs.

Shipping to a "residential" address can add $150 to the shipping costs, & lift gate, another $85, so shipping to a "commercial" address or Freight Terminal is by far the cheapest approach. A Commercial address doesn't mean that they must have a fork lift or loading dock, it just means that you must have the capability to lift the axle/s out of the truck, which is easily possible if you remove the axle from the pallet & have a buddy help you lift it/them off. Eliminating the pallet will make the shipment weigh less, however it increases the damage potential.
