Question New Axles?

1961 26’ Overlander International
I want to replace the axles on my Airstream and would like to know which axle to get. They measure 581/2” from outside to outside of the plate that is bolted to the outside of the frame. It has 12” drums. I would like to get the complete axles ready to bolt on if possible. I have attached pictures.

Short answer is you have several choices in brand names and specs- the more popular seem to be Henschen, Dexter, and Axis. Long answer is do a search here on this subject and you will get more info than you thought possible. Good luck and have fun- tim

There are more axle threads than you can shake a stick at on the forum. Just go to the "Axle" sub topic and scroll down. If you want the original equipment replacement then that would be the Henschen Axle. These are direct bolt on replacements. The only place to buy these are from Inland RV, Inland RV Center - The Nations Leading Expert in Airstream Innovations.

The Dexter and other brands will require some specing out and minnor modifications to install. But there are many who will be able to chime in and help in this process.

Good luck with your project.

Don

I replaced the complete axles, including brakes, on my '61 Overlander with Henschen axles from InlandRV. All they need to order them is your serial number(VIN). Easy, but not the cheapest. Great service, I used them again when I ordered my axle for my '63 Globetrotter.

I got axles for my Trade Wind through Colin Hyde ( you may know him from the VAP podcast). Colin is no longer with GSM Vehicles and is building his own business. The walked me through all the critical measurements and then placed the order. His prices are very competitive. Shoot him an email at colinhydeairstream@gmail.com. He is a great guy to deal with.

Same experience for me with my Caravanner as well. Colin made it easy and in my case it also included switching from a sprung axle to a torsion axle.

cheers,

For 12" brakes you will have to specify for non-Henschen axles. And it may be difficult to get the vendor on line with the 12" brakes. For Henschen axles it will come equipped with 12" brakes. Like it was stated above, supplying the VIN for your trailer and that is all you will need for an axle order.

It is my understanding that pre-1970 something these is no drop in axle of any manufacturer. Henschen will be the closest, however expect some not much modifications to make it the same as originally equipped.
